rule of the internet: whenever a journalist suggests something provocative, and ends the title with a question mark, you know that the answer is irrelevant and the writer is a fucking douchenozzle.

There is evidence about the local climate but that doesn't in itself prove anything about global climate.

The kind of global climate change we're rushing towards is going to be much, much worse than anything the Mayans had to deal with.

Yeah, "pretty much."

Except for that "Ice Age Scare" during the 1970's.

Oh lord not this shit again.

Many more scientists were predicting warming rather than cooling (due to aerosols which do indeed have a cooling effect and were increasing) but nobody knew enough to make a confident prediction. The scientific position at the time was: "we don't really know".

That's already begun. Droughts and heatwaves aren't much good for agriculture though.

This is just a small taste of what's ahead. The planet will be transformed.

I guess we better just lock the thread now that mcgruff found it. He doesn't like to be civil.

"Fair" just like "Good" and "Evil" only exists in the constructs of a human mind, there are no such concepts observable in nature.

On a positive note, I can start wearing my speedos in summer.

You're not rational, you're like the square root of negative one: imaginary.

Also, the Mayans were destroyed by left-wing authoritarian collectivism. Not mentioned in this article is the most important archeological evidence of what happened: tree pollen is virtually absent from the soil in the years leading up to their demise, then corn pollen is replaced by weed pollen.

Forced, collective farming using standardized irrigation and slash-and-burn agricultural methods made them universally vulnerable to drought and erosion. When they had plenty, they bred like lemmings and became overpopulated and deforested their land, converting everything to plantations. As a result, they had nothing to eat when struck by some consecutive years of drought. This led to economic collapse, social unrest, war, and disease (also evident in the archaeological record).

It was not the climate's fault; it was their own fault, for being overpopulated and inflexible, because of their rigid and uniform social structure.
