emerge world stops at python-2.2.1-r2 on gentoo-ppc 1.2

Hi I'm installing gentoo on my powerbook g4.
Did everything according to the online guide.

Did a emerge rsync
emerge --fetchonly blablabla
emerge world

during the last one everything gets compiled till the point that python needs some compiling, then it checks if the "C++ compiler (gcc -o2 -pipe -mmultiple -mstring ) works" and the script comes to the conclusion that it doesn't. Then the installation is halted because the C++ compiler cannot make the executables.

Could it be a that the gcc version is too new to compile python?

How can I solve it?
