Can anyone shed some light on what the colored status symbols that show up to the left of packages when doing emerge --pretend mean? So far I've seen a green N, a yellow R, and a cyan U. I'm guessing they stand for new/ok, reinstall/possible conflict, and update/informative, but that's just a guess. I haven't been able to find this mentioned in any documentation, but I'm sure I just haven't found the right place yet. Still new to portage. :-) Thanks.

I was about to ask man page for what? I read it several times and never noticed. I checked one more time before asking and found it under the pretend option.

If anyone cares:
Code:
--pretend, -p
instead of actually performing  the  merge,  simply
display  what *would* have been installed if --pre-
tend weren't used.   Using  --pretend  is  strongly
recommended  before  installing an unfamiliar pack-
              age.  In the printout, N = new, U = upgrading, R  =
              replacing.

What would cause a reemerge vs. an update though? That is more of what I am getting at.

If you "emerge package", three things can happen to package:
1. package was not installed, you get an N.
2. package was installed but a newer version is available, you get a U.
3. package was installed and is still the current version, you get an R.

I've always thought it was when you tried to reinstall the exact same version that is already there.

OK, I put my brain back in. I get it now.

Nothing to see here, move along.
