|
|
Can anyone shed some light on what the colored status symbols that show up to the left of packages when doing emerge --pretend mean? So far I've seen a green N, a yellow R, and a cyan U. I'm guessing they stand for new/ok, reinstall/possible conflict, and update/informative, but that's just a guess. I haven't been able to find this mentioned in any documentation, but I'm sure I just haven't found the right place yet. Still new to portage. Thanks. |

-ewen | I was about to ask man page for what? I read it several times and never noticed. I checked one more time before asking and found it under the pretend option.
If anyone cares: Code: | --pretend, -p
instead of actually performing the merge, simply
display what *would* have been installed if --pre-
tend weren't used. Using --pretend is strongly
recommended before installing an unfamiliar pack-
age. In the printout, N = new, U = upgrading, R =
replacing. |

That makes me think... what is the difference between upgrade and replace. :ponder: _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

If you "emerge package", three things can happen to package:
1. package was not installed, you get an N.
2. package was installed but a newer version is available, you get a U.
3. package was installed and is still the current version, you get an R. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

I've always thought it was when you tried to reinstall the exact same version that is already there. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
