I'm trying to install Gentoo on a AMD Athlon XP 1800, without swap and with only 512 mb ram.
1) I downloaded and untarred stage3 x86 i686 into an ext4 partition from Puppy Linux,
2) mounted proc/ sys/ and dev/,
3) chrooted into the new environment
4) emerge-webrsync
5) eselect profile "default/linux/x86/13.0/desktop"
Code:

Memory is full? should I add some swap and run "swapon" after chrooting?

Appears so, ran out of RAM, though usually it should be enough with 512M as long as you don't have a GUI loaded.

You can set up you swap outside of the chroot too, it doesn't matter...

Emerging through Puppy may block Gentoo from allocating memory. Do you have any other options to do that?

swap would be the simples solution.
It doesn't even have to be a block device representing a partition, a flat file is enough.
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=swapfile  bs=1024  count=102400 #for a 100 MB empty file
mkswap swapfile
swapon swapfile

But 512MB should be enough in most situations ... check

solved by adding some swap
