Hi,

when trying to use fdisk to create my partitions

# fdisk /dev/hda

unable to read /dev/hda

my hd is a Samsung 10gb

note: on Mandrake 8.2 and Slackware 8 works, so the problem is not the hd

i found people with the same problem :

Buying a new HD and setting 'multi-mode' in the kernel appear to be the only options.
You did try setting 'multi-mode' as Oz suggested in your 2nd link, correct?

Follow the install instructions here. Code listing 25 has instructions for making the kernel.

After typing 'make menuconfig' you should see a Linux Kernel Configuration menu.
Select ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support, then IDE,ATA and ATAPI Block devices.

Highlight the option for 'Use multi-mode by default' and press the Y key. Exit, saving the
changes. Then continue with the remaining steps under Code listing 25.

If the gentoo CD does not work (from your earlier post, it would seem like it would not) you can try:
a. using the Mandrake CD in rescue mode and then proceeding with fdisk and installation
b. using a boot floppy such as tomsrtbt (look into Tips & Tricks for info) if it recognizes your HD.

Great! Keep the tomsrtbt floppy around. It may come in handy.
