hello, after the big udev upgrade that just happened 197-r4 and some other packages I rebooted finally and now my *DM login seems to be broken.
(I run awesome-wm, but the same issue exists with XSesssion[xterm])

at first I thought the issue was just slim, so I switched to LXDM with the same issue, root logs in fine.. but my regular user refuses to login..

not sure what the issue could be, maybe PAM related? but now i'm not so sure.. everything there looked fine. no log errors really,
not sure how to make slim or lxdm more verbose..

Quote:

tail -n 100 /var/log/lxdm.log
** Message: quit code 1

I can login to X as a regular user from console without any issues using 'startx'.. its only my LXDM and slim that do not work.
either one will do the same thing.

it accepts my username and password, then just send me straight back to the login prompt..
The /var/log files don't really give me any clues.(Sorry)

I think it might be udev permission related because, xterm (once i'm logged in with startx) is also broken, gives a ttydev error.
looks like the permissions of /dev/tty are set as root:root.. i manually reset this and xterm works again.. but perhaps some other udev object is related to my login
problems?? not sure..

Finally sudo is broken only in an X session...
sudo 'any command foo'
will just hang and never prompt for a password.. ^C gets me out.. and sudo will work fine from non X consoles. I can su without issues though.

please help!

Thanks.

Hi tecknocrust,
I am not sure if my problem applies to you, but it might help. I tried login in using slim, I would enter my name and password and X would start but the screen was black with a mouse cursor that looked like an "X"

So here's how I fixed it:
1) Edit /etc/slim.conf
Code:

login_cmd           exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session
# login_cmd           exec /bin/bash -login /usr/share/slim/Xsession %session

2) Add dbus to the default run level:
Code:

rc-update add dbus default

PS: Use ~/.xinitrc (an example file can be found at /usr/share/doc/slim-<version>/xinitrc.sample)

Hey thanks all, um I figured it out, had to wipe all the .x*** files from the local profile, this repaired the issue..

however my other issues still exist, related to /dev/tty permissions.. but that needs a different thread i think :)
