Hi,

I am trying hard to compile best suitable gentoo kernel for my HP ProLiant MicroServer N36L and I cannot find what am I missing in kernel config that I get error during boot as follows:
Code:
!! Block device /dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce7 is not a valid root device...
!! Could not find the root block device in .
Please specify another value or: press Enter for the same, type "shell" for shell, or "q" to skip...
root block device() ::

Gentoo is installed on fake RAID1, I am compiling kernel using genkernel with --dmraid option. Just before error line during boot I see that all partitions of my RAID are correctly discovered (I get the list from DMRAID). When I enter the shell after the error all /dev/sd* entries are present same as all /dev/mapper/pdc*, so I assume that kernel is discovering my RAID correctly. Root partition is formatted with ext4 which I also included into kernel.

I have also an older kernel (3.1.6) which is booting correctly but its configuration is much wider (I have loaded almost all I could - it is not the smallest kernel :P) so I guess that this is not a hardware failure...

Find below my fstab, grub.conf and kernel config. If you need anything else just let me know.

Code:
mnet-proliant ~ # cat /etc/fstab | egrep -v "^#"

/dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce1             /boot           ext4            noauto,noatime  1 2
/dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce7             /               ext4            noatime         0 1
/dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce2             none            swap            sw              0 0
/dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce5             /var            ext4            noatime         0 0
/dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce6             /usr            ext4            noatime         0 0

Code:
mnet-proliant boot # cat boot/grub/grub.conf | egrep -v "^#"

galandilias,

I have a microserver too. I didn't even know it had fakeraid ... As mine does not dual boot with Windows, I use LVM on top of kernel raid.

Code:
!! Block device /dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce7 is not a valid root device...
!! Could not find the root block device in .

This piece of the error message is key.
The kernel should have listed all the block devices it can see between the 'in' and the full stop.
There are none.

This suggests that at the time the message is produced, the kernel and initrd have not detected any block devices.

Does the system boot if you enter the rest of the commands from the initrd init script into the console by hand?
That would demonstrate that the issue is a timing problem.

The workaround is rather ugly - edit the initrd init script to a a delay before the system tries to mount root, so the /dev entries have time to appear.

Hi,

Thanks for fast reply :) I was just about adding this delay, but there is one thing worth to mention before I do it. Server is booting just fine when I am using an older kernel that I have compiled before, using much larger number of modules...

[edit]
I have managed to unpack initramfs (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-429263-highlight-initramfs.html), please tell me now where should I put this delay in or how should I execute rest of the commands manually?

[edit2]
Is this delay (I found rootdelay=x option available in grub <- this it the one you have mentioned?) different in anything from pressing Enter after this command?
Code:
!! Block device /dev/mapper/pdc_eaedhaegce7 is not a valid root device...
!! Could not find the root block device in .
Please specify another value or: press Enter for the same, type "shell" for shell, or "q" to skip...
root block device() ::

This probably won't help, but I had a similar problem with software RAID. My case had a partitioned RAID array, and while mdadm --assemble --scan built the array, the separate partition devices /dev/md127p1... didn't appear. Following the assemble with an innocuous query mdadm --detail --scan made them appear.

Perhaps an equivalend mdraid query will bring your /dev entries to life.

The problem is that I actually see all entries in /dev meaning all /dev/sd* and also all /dev/mapper/pdc_* so at the moment of booting I guess that discovery works fine. Moreover just before trying to "Determine root device" I see all of my RAID partitions beeing activated by DM RAID...

i'm not sure if it's still need, but you should try add the rootfstype=ext4 command to grub as you root is ext4

Yes - I am still without working kernel for 3.7.10 :/ I have tried adding this rootfstype=ext4 option but with no result - take a look on screen I just did from booting - maybe this will give you some ideas.

I still did not try NeddySeagoon advice with manual launching init commands or adding sleep command to init script as I do not know what exactly should I do

galandilias,

If such a command existed, you need real_rootdelay (it doesn't).
rootdelay or rootwait will both be applied to the initrd being mounted as root, not your real_root.
The delay goes in the initrd init script, just before your real root is mounted.

When you are in the rescue shell, after booting has failed, execute the remaining commands from the initrd by typing them at the keyboard.
If all your /dev entries are there and your raid has started, thats everything from mounting the real_root to the end of the init file.

Could it be just resume to classic "omg typo!" ?

krinn,

OMG! Well caught ... but why are there no block devices listed in the error ?

Hi,

Finally I have found some time to experiment with your suggestions and what I did:

repacked initramfs with
Code:
sleep 30
just before
Code:
good_msg 'Determining root device...'
and after reboot result is the same :( obviously sleep is working as expected (I have placed in init script good_msg also before sleep to verify if it is working...)

Do you have any other ideas? I am still thinking that I am missing something in my kernel config...

OMG! You are right! :) server is working after changing that in fstab and also in grub.conf... But why the heck it has changed between kernel version 3.1.6 and 3.7.10?! My old kernel did boot up properly with old names...

Anyway - problem solved! :D Thank you guys!
