I'd like to get my laptop set up so that my home dir is stored on my home NAS. However, I'd also like to have the most recently used items stored locally for when I am not on my home network. Any manipulations of this partial view would be saved back to my NAS the next time I was on my home network. Any ideas how to do this?
I've been looking for a while but none of the potential solutions seem to handle temporary loss of a backing device gracefully nor support partial mirroring of files. |

I can't give any concrete advice since I've never run that kind of setup myself, but IIRC the in-kernel AFS implementation can do what you want.
The technical term for it is "disconnected operation" if that helps in searching. |
