I just finished a Gentoo install with a nomultilib and hardened setup. I've never used these options before and I am having trouble which I don't recall ever running in to.

when I try to install python-2.7.3-r2 I get sandbox access violations. below is the sandbox log it pointed to. Has anyone ever run in to this?

Code:

Isn't the sandbox used on non-hardened installs as well? why am I just having this problem now?
Is it typical for python to try and access the /run directory?

I have not been able to reproduce (tested by running the following).

Code:
FEATURES="assume-digests binpkg-logs config-protect-if-modified distlocks ebuild-locks fixlafiles merge-sync news parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unknown-features-warn unmerge-logs unmerge-orphans userfetch" USERLAND="GNU" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 python3_2" ELIBC="glibc" USE="acl alsa amd64 berkdb bindist bzip2 cli cracklib crypt cxx dri gdbm gpm gtk hardened iconv ipv6 justify mmx modules mudflap ncurses nls nptl openmp pam pax_kernel pcre qt4 readline session sse sse2 ssl tcpd unicode urandom zlib" ebuild /usr/portage/dev-lang/python/python-2.7.3-r2.ebuild install

Here is my emerge --info for my installed version as well (not what I tested, but also worksforme).

Well, as long as a solution is found... I wonder why it messed up with your sandbox and not mine.
