Hi
I'm using ADSL to connect to the Internet. Do I need to "emerge ppp" ?

Note: I read it's about dial up but I'm confused about DSL connection using pppoe.

Thanks

certem,

It depends on your connection and your router.

If your ISP uses PPPoE and you need to terminate the PPP yourself, then you need PPP
If your ISP used PPPoE and your router provides the PPP end point ay your end, you get ordinary ethernet out of your router.
In the latter case, you need to ender your credentials into the router, so that the router can authenticate with your ISP.

Your ISP may deliver your service using PPPoA, in which case your router will provide a normal ethernet connection and you will need to enter your credentials into the router.

In the UK, ADSL and ADSL+ use PPPoA, your router takes care of authentication with your ISP and you get ethernet from the router
FTTC uses PPPoE and BT provide a transparent bridge. Terminating the PPPoE is your problem.
You can buy a router that understands PPPoE and plugs into the BT provided transparent bridge or you can use PPPoE on your Gentoo.
BT don't like you to provide you own one box solution.
