Hi,
my goal is to install dev-lang/php:5.3 and phpmyadmin without dev-lang/php:5.5 .
This can be accomplished installing before dev-lang/php:5.3 and then phpmyadmin.

emerge dev-lang/php:5.3
emerge phpmyadmin

This way the emerge phpmyadmin found the dev-lang/php RDEPEND and all is fine.

If i try to install both at the same time:

emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 phpmyadmin

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

my question is:
why in this way emerge want to install dev-lang/php-5.5.12:5.5 also ?
even if dev-lang/php-5.3.28-r3:5.3 satisfies phpmyadmin ?

I know i can play with package.mask but it is to understand better portage and emerge.

If you you look at the httpd-php ebuild you can see
Code:
RDEPEND="|| ( dev-lang/php:${SLOT}[fpm]
           dev-lang/php:${SLOT}[apache2]
           dev-lang/php:${SLOT}[cgi] )"
DEPEND=""

So, if you install virtual/httpd-php-5.5, it will install dev-lang/php-5.5
Maybe over ebuild want to install php-5.5

I see but the command is

emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 phpmyadmin

so maybe i expected virtual/httpd-php:5.3 and not 5.5.

emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 phpmyadmin is the same as emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 && emerge phpmyadmin
First, emerge will install dev-lang/php:5.3 and all his dependencies then phpmyadmin with all his depencies
If you don't mask dev-lang/php>5.3 phpmyadmin will install the lastest stable php so 5.5

It is not the same.

emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 phpmyadmin is not like emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 && emerge phpmyadmin .

Installing with emerge dev-lang/php:5.3 phpmyadmin emerge installs at the same time :
dev-lang/php-5.3.28-r3:5.3
dev-lang/php-5.5.12:5.5
dev-db/phpmyadmin-4.1.7:4.1.7

and in don't want it .

if you use emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 && emerge phpmyadmin then emerge do the right thing.
First install
dev-lang/php:5.3

then the phpmyadmin RDEPEND is ok
RDEPEND="
dev-lang/php[crypt,ctype,filter,json,session,unicode]
|| (
dev-lang/php[mysqli]
dev-lang/php[mysql]
)
"

and dev-lang/php-5.5.12:5.5 is not installed.

The question is why emerge -vp dev-lang/php:5.3 phpmyadmin don't resolv phpmyadmin's RDEPEND directly with dev-lang/php:5.3 .

Did you try this? I think this don't work

Ok i restart the test with binary packages:

My goal is to install for example dev-db/phpmyadmin with dev-lang/php:5.3
but without dev-lang/php:5.5 and maybe without the package.mask .

emerge dev-lang/php:5.3 virtual/httpd-php:5.3
then
emerge phpmyadmin

now if i update word

emerge -vpuND world

Local copy of remote index is up-to-date and will be used.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[binary NS ] dev-lang/php-5.5.12:5.5 [5.3.28-r3:5.3] USE="bzip2 calendar cli crypt ctype curl fileinfo filter fpm ftp hash iconv json mysql mysqli nls opcache pcntl pdo phar posix readline session sharedmem simplexml soap sockets sqlite ssl sysvipc tokenizer unicode xml xmlreader xmlwriter zip zlib -apache2 -bcmath -berkdb -cdb -cgi -cjk -debug -embed -enchant -exif -firebird -flatfile (-frontbase) -gd -gdbm -gmp -imap -inifile -intl -iodbc -ipv6 -kerberos -ldap -ldap-sasl -libedit -libmysqlclient -mhash -mssql -oci8-instant-client -odbc -postgres -qdbm -recode (-selinux) -snmp -spell (-sybase-ct) -systemd -threads -tidy -truetype -wddx -xmlrpc -xpm -xslt" 0 kB
[binary NS ] virtual/httpd-php-5.5:5.5 [5.3:5.3] 0 kB

Total: 2 packages (2 in new slots, 2 binaries), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Why phpmyadmin wants dev-lang/php:5.5 even if it is satisfied by dev-lang/php:5.3 ?

phpmyadmin
RDEPEND="
dev-lang/php[crypt,ctype,filter,json,session,unicode]
|| (
dev-lang/php[mysqli]
dev-lang/php[mysql]
)
"

If i update world and then run emerge -vp --depclean
all is ok and no packages is removed.

but now i have php 5.3 and 5.5 installed.
equery l '*' | grep -i php
app-admin/eselect-php-0.7.1-r3
dev-db/phpmyadmin-4.1.7
dev-lang/php-5.3.28-r3
dev-lang/php-5.5.12
virtual/httpd-php-5.3
virtual/httpd-php-5.5

Is this a "bug" ?

Perhaps surprisingly, it does not. The reason dev-lang/php:5.5 is being pulled in is due to it being considered an upgrade from dev-lang/php:5.3, not because it is meant to fulfill the dependency which either it or the 5.3 slot would satisfy.

It is a "feature", the same that once upon a time pulled gtk+:3 in to systems which previously had gtk+:2 but had nothing requiring the later version, and that pulls in new versions of python as the reach stable, and a multitude of other such presumptive upgrades.

In short, mask the slots or version ranges that you do not want, portage will let you know when anything actually requires some condition only satisfied by those slots or versions.
