Some say that after watching Parsifal you realize that you have no idea what you just saw, but you know it was among the most profound experiences of your life.

So I saw the Met's Parsifal over the weekend. Easily the greatest operatic experience of my life up to this point, and frankly it is difficult to imagine anything topping it except possibly a perfect Tristan. The entire experience--the singers, the production, the music--was overwhelming. Kaufmann as Parsifal, Rene Pape as Gurnemanz, and Peter Mattei as Amfortas--I don't think singers exist today that could match them. And despite being a very long opera, it felt short. I can't recommend this performance highly enough: if you missed it, go to the rebroadcast in a movie theatre near you on March 20.
