How often do you check the condition of your guns?

Once I put a pistol in storage. I first cleaned it very thoroughly (disassembled and cleaned it, oiled all parts thoroughly with penetrating oil, cleaned all that off thoroughly, and put a light coat of machine oil on it, reassembled it) and put it in its foam-padded protective case with a couple dessicant packets (silica gel). Two or three years later, I took it out and found a tiny spot of rust just starting in a grip crevice on the slide I must have used to cycle the action a few times after cleaning it, where some skin cells or skin oil must have lodged. So I'd say any gun not being used should be checked and cleaned annually.

I gave a Ruger 10/22 I used to have to my father when I went overseas in the Army 25 years ago. About five years ago, I asked if he still had it, and he pulled it out of the back of his bedroom closet. It was in good shape, but had lots of fine corrosive pitting all over it.

Any firearm should be cleaned after every use. The propellant leaves corrosive residue inside the weapon, particularly inside the barrel and chamber. I think this is somewhat less of an issue with shotguns, because you don't rely on the condition of the barrel as much.

A weapon that's in occasional use should be somewhat more thoroughly cleaned before being put away, with more care paid to a final wiping down to remove anything your skin might leave on it. I've actually seen firearms with rusty fingerprints on them. They should then be looked over and wiped down occasionally (say monthly, more often if people might have been touching them).

It's best to keep it in their cases or a gun case, where they are protected from dust and exploring fingers, but that may not be ideal in a home defense scenario. Locking that disables the action (e.g. trigger lock) is a must in my opinion, particularly for a weapon you keep loaded for security. Some other kind of measure to prevent theft (e.g. gun safe or locking rack) is a must for anyone with children.

For people like pjp, for whom a locked rack in the bedroom closet is too far away (and who may have no children, drunk friends, or stupid girlfriend/wife), they make these:

The Marine Magnum is a somewhat expensive shotgun (although high-end hunting, skeet, and tactical guns go for much more). Another approach might be to buy an entry-level shotgun suitable to large bird hunting and skeet and trap shooting, use it a lot to gain skill (if not skeet and trap, then blasting 2-liter soda bottles in the desert with your buddies), having it in the home meantime for protection, and then later decide if you want something more specifically suited to home defense.

Ruby Ridge, Waco, Elian, and many more. And people wonder why some of us are strong supporters of the 2nd amendment. From my cold dead hands.

Looks like the Neo-Nazis are fairly angry about Ruby Ridge. Didn't the Allies fight against them in the two world wars? :P

Everyone in the US should be angry about Ruby Ridge.

I don't have direct experience with guns, but from my metalworking days, I found that using thin latex-type gloves while handling and oiling eliminates the skin-oils problem. (And helps minimize your own exposure to not-so-good-for-you substances too.) These days you can get nitrile gloves in boxes of 100 for not that much money. I've had tools sit in storage for over 2 years and they looked good as new. Well worth using them.

Yeah, it almost makes one want to bomb a government building: it's that aggravating. Oh wait...

I'm glad to hear you say that. That cocksucker, Lon Horiuchi, is one fucker I would put down myself.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying you would condone some of the events that occurred, but I've always perceived you as being very sympathetic to semi military entities as ATF.

Interesting that you choose that as an initial reaction. Doesn't seem healthy.

I agree. Blowing up government buildings is not the action of a healthy mind.
