Same problem as here (but solution not appropriate):

I get this error when emerging php (with mysql 5.5.2 :
Code: | checking for mysql_close in -lmysqlclient_r... no
checking for mysql_error in -lmysqlclient_r... no
configure: error: mysql configure failed. Please check config.log for more information. |

See this bug report: https://bugs.gentoo.org/440918
If you need libmysql, apply the patch or create the symlink.
Better: Switch to mysqlnd |
