I have installed Gentoo on my new computer and while (almost) everything works fine there are several minor issues that are bugging me:

1. Using gdm as a login manager, I am having issues when logging out (from both XFCE and Gnome). What happens is that the screen goes blank, not completely black, backlight stays on. One way to fix it is to switch to any text console and back and then I can see gdm login screen fine. It actually appears that while the screen is blank gdm is functioning, since if I blindly type something, I can see it when I get gdm back. Also, if I let the blank screen alone, the monitor will eventually turn off (after about 10 minutes) and at that point when screen comes back on everything s fine.

2. I use nvidia-settings to set my brighthness lower that what is otherwise possible with just monitor controls. Everytime I start XFCE, "nvidia-settings -l" is run, which sets the brightness. The problem with this is that anytime screensaver kicks in, the settings are lost. When I search for this problem, I found some old posts (~2008) saying that the problem is screen fading, when xscreensaver changes gamma settings, but apparently these issues have been fixed by now. However, disabling fading in xscreensaver works for me, but I do not think why should I have been hit with an old bug. Also, search in Gentoo forums returns nothing and I am running fairly common stable setup, so I think it would have been reported here.

3. Last issue is also nvidia drivers - related. Whenever I use nvidia-settings to change anything, the file it writes, .nvidia-settings-rc is wrong, since it records my display as $HOSTNAME:0 (instead of just 0). Loading this file leads to a predictable error: " Cannot open display 'miro2:0'.". (miro2 is my hostname). Deleting "miro2" from the file solves everything. Again, I have no clue why this would be happening or why aren't more people seeing this. Google search found that this hit people as early is 2005, so I think it would be fixed by now.

Since I am using all stable packages and have a rather common setup, I believe that I perhaps misconfigured something that is responsible for these issues, but I am at loss what it could be. Any suggestions?

Please post your emerge --info.
Did you install system corresponding with Gentoo Handbook ?
Because I have not any that issue, also related to hostname.

So, your .nvidia-settings-rc file is valid and can be loaded with "nvidia-setting -l -V" without error? Can you look at the lines at the bottom specifying brightness, contrast and gamma? Do they start with ":0" (or ":1" for dual monitor setup)? This may be a small issue but it may uncover a deeper problem.

Yes, I did follow the handbook, but it is fairly long process, so I could have missed something ...

Here is emerge --info
