uralponkhi,
Welcome to Gentoo
Moved from Documentation, Tips & Tricks to Gentoo Chat.
Random introductions belong here or in OTW. This is probably a gentler introduction to the forums. _________________ Regards,

Welcome to Gentoo all 3 of you, and all other newbs. Your Linux life just got a lot easier: you'll never ever have to reinstall again, unless you get a hard-disk failure ;-) and all your software will be configured in the same way as the "upstream" authors wrote it to, so you can always get support from their channels.
Can I recommend you don't run unstable across the board, and use update to maintain your systems and unmask packages to unstable if you're happy to deal with the bugs, or know the software well; or to configure USE flags on a per-package basis. Also, set your machines to use FEATURES=buildpkg so you can roll back packages if there's a bug with the latest version.
If you need live support, use IRC: chat.freenode.net and /join #gentoo -- #gentoo-chat if you want to meet other users, and #gentoo-dev-help if you need help writing an ebuild.
HTH, and welcome again :-)

I don't know what made me laugh harder. The usual Airplane taunts that I knew were coming, or the steveL sales pitch in the middle of the intros.

Hi, newcomers. Welcome to Gentoo. Can I recommend you don't use some other user's script to update your system, and that you read the Gentoo Docs and the man pages for emerge and portage. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

Do you mean "substitute for having"? _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

Welcome to the forums you all!
Do you feel insecure and dazed when you watch all the "gcc -O9 blah blah" running fast and furious across your screen? Does the prospect of not understanding what is compiling and how it is compiling seem too daunting? Welcome to quietemerge! It is the perfect way to gaze at the emerge output. Old packages get a countdown timer, and new packages don't get any - isn't it the perfect way to figure out which packages have just been pulled in by a new dependency on javascript?!
Enjoy your stay in the forums, and stay the hell away from OTW, at least initially. And also avoid the gladiator. _________________ emerge --quiet redefined | E17 vids: I, II |

I've been coming for years now. I find coming regularly is a great help. The more I come, the further I get. Plus it's always nice to come with other people rather than come on your own. |

Never take advice from ppurka. See that impressive post count? In his case, those aren't posts helping other people; those are all the problems ppurka has had over the years. Not a week goes by without ppurka experiencing some kind of major crisis with his system, so he's the last person you want to take advice from.
