Beautifully shot.
Moments in the film are thrilling.
I wish it wasn't 3D. _________________ What looks like a cat, flies like a bat, brays like a donkey, and plays like a monkey? |

I'm just waiting for the wave of children & crowds (but mainly kids) to subside, start Jan should be sufficient.
Don't want 3D and I've heard that the frame rate @ 2D causes headaches in some. _________________ When you break rules, break 'em good and hard |

My main reason to go watch this film was for its 48 fps. I wanted to see what difference it made. All I could make out was the scenes were spectacular but that could be due to imax (or whatever sophisticated equipment was used to shoot it).
3D has always given me headaches. This has the same problems as any other 3D movie. _________________ What looks like a cat, flies like a bat, brays like a donkey, and plays like a monkey? |

I'm afraid it will ruin my memories of the book, which I read for the first time when I was about eleven or so. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

I think the most noticeable effect of increased frame rate should be less blur of things in rapid motion. So thinks like a swinging sword, a trotting horse's legs, a waterfall, or a flying arrow, should have looked more natural.
They should be shooting at 120 fps, because I think that's the frame rate that TV is going to standardize on (or at least, that's what's presently planned, for the UHDTV specification).
@notageek: had you read the book before, and if so, did the movie measure up? _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

My understanding of an increased frame rate was that it reduced and eliminated a lot of blur. Hmmm. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.

I can't understand what you're trying to say. I just said that increased frame rate reduces the apparent blur of high-velocity motion. Are you confused? Are you trying to reinforce what I said? Are you trying to disagree with what I said? _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

No, it's 24fps, with interlaced frames to provide stereoscopy. Hence the blur, the frames are literally skipping left and right due to the different point of view of each frame. _________________

Yeah, but if it's 24 fps per eye, and you've got two eyes... _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

Heard it was default at 48 - apart from some cinema with older kit, where it's 24. _________________ When you break rules, break 'em good and hard |

Braved the waves of school children and hmmm ....
I can see what some are saying with 2D and the newer frame rate, FX did look,
well FX and a bit plastic (the Eagles being one) - traditional 24 fps would have softened this a bit.
Also I wish Jackson * would scale back on things.
It was a good afternoon out, not brilliant mind - but there are two others
coming up.
* Now if he'd put everything into one picture and decided whether it
was going to be a film for children, or modified it for an older audience
(with less is more) we may have been talking. _________________ When you break rules, break 'em good and hard |

I read the books when I was about 11, and I can tell you Gollum's cave got ripped straight out of my imagination. It was spot-on perfect.
Yeah, it's a little long. Jackson included some things I don't remember existing in the book (how Erebor came to be as it is, the brown wizard), but I don't feel their inclusion made the film suffer.
I saw it twice, both in 24fps 2D. I want nothing to do with headaches or nausea. _________________ Addendum to Murphy's Law: Everything has already gone wrong, you just don't know about it yet. |

Underwhelmed.
They should have trimmed the movie down a little and made it into 1 movie that touched on most of the bases rathet than inflating it into LotR. Wired's review said it best when they said it was like watching peter jackson make a revrrse turducken. |

| the move itself was decent. if you're a fan of LOTR, I recommend it. however, don't see it in 3D... the 3D was pretty bad. |
