hi community,
i want to share some things i have observed on my system. i have had not the time for technical details so i just write a short thread. maybe it help some people here.
i am using xfce as desktop environment.
my problem:
some applications i wanted to use to rip a audio cd did not work properly.
i tried
first the inserted audio cd was not recognized.
after i started dbus the behaviour changed. the cd was recognized but could not be read.
vlc was all the time able to recognize the audio cd and to play it.
my user was also in the proper groups.
i searched the gentoo forum for some hints but found no exact hint. i saw only that some users have also trouble to get their multimedia equipment working properly.
maybe there are some problems with these applications because they try to use mechanics from media recognition of desktop environments.
my solution:
i found an overview of ripping tools on the german ubuntu wiki:
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/CDs_rippen
within this list the application asunder is listed.
as i understand the home page this application does not require a specific desktop environment.
so asunder works properly within my environment.
best regards
