Hello all,

My apologies for the simplistic question but I'm still relatively new to Gentoo and I'm finding it difficult to get my head around the following problem. In an attempt to update my entire system I've gotten to a point were i cant resolve the following dependencies. Admittedly I'm not entirely sure what would be the most appropriate information to provide, so subsequently i've just provided the terminal output which i hope helps elaborates my problem.

static_void1024,

Your problem appears to be with sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1. This is my package info for ~amd64

Code:
gentoo-gateway X11 # equery l -p sys-apps/shadow
 * Searching for shadow in sys-apps ...
[-P-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.4.2-r6:0
[-P-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.4.3:0
[-P-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5:0
[-P-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1:0
[-P-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r2:0
[IP-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5.1:0
gentoo-gateway X11 # equery l -p sys-auth/pambase
 * Searching for pambase in sys-auth ...
[-P-] [  ] sys-auth/pambase-20101024-r2:0
[-P-] [  ] sys-auth/pambase-20120417:0
[IP-] [  ] sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1:0

Do you have a mixture of testing and stable :?: That can cause these types of conflict :wink:

Admittedly I'm not entirely sure, however I think that I might be using a mixture of testing and stable as you suggested.

Sorry I'm not a 100% percent sure what this output is telling me?

Code:

matt@Gentoo ~ $ equery l -p sys-apps/shadow
 * Searching for shadow in sys-apps ...
[-P-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.4.2-r6:0
[IP-] [  ] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.4.3:0
[-P-] [ ~] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5:0
[-P-] [M~] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1:0
[-P-] [ ~] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r2:0
[-P-] [ ~] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5.1:0

matt@Gentoo ~ $ equery l -p sys-auth/pambase
 * Searching for pambase in sys-auth ...
[IP-] [  ] sys-auth/pambase-20101024-r2:0
[-P-] [ ~] sys-auth/pambase-20120417:0

static_void1024,

[-P-] [M~] sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1:0 indicates that the package is masked meaning it's blocked from being installed.

sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1 is in sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1's dependency graph

Can you paste back package.accept_keywords and package.mask to get a better idea of what's going on :?:

Oh that what the 'M' represented. That actually makes perfect sense, i feel a bit silly now. :oops:

Unfortunately my package.accept_keywords and package.mask is a horrible collaboration of comments and unsorted commands due to a trial and error approach to this problem. Subsequently I feel this may make it very difficult to see what going on. But I've provided the files regardless, however I'll also try and tidy it up a little in a attempt to make it a little more eligible.

$ cat /etc/portage/package.mask

Also grep too confirms the masking of shadow.

$ cat /etc/portage/package.mask | grep shadow
Code:

=sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1

However when i remove the entity i still end with the same results.

[edit]

Not entirely sure if this is relevant but...

Code:

Gentoo matt # cat /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords | grep shadow
Gentoo matt # cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | grep shadow
Gentoo matt # cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | grep pambase

=sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1 ~amd64
=sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1 ~gentoo
=sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1::gentoo
Gentoo matt # cat /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords | grep pambase
#=sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1 ~amd64

I think this may confirm the stable and non stable package but I'm not sure?

Kind regards

=sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1 is in package.mask

You have a number of entries in package.accept_keywords that, as far as I can tell, don't affect anything :?

I'm guessing that you were attempting to emerge the latest gnome desktop. You should look into --autounmask-write in the emerge man page and let that generate the file for you.

I'm at a loss for any other recommendations and I don't want to have you try anything that would potentially bork you system :oops:

Removing sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1 might resolve your immediate problem, but these files should be cleaned-up a bit :wink:

Yes i felt many were unnecessary, and i genuinely cant remember when, or even why I added them. But ill take your advice and have a good read through the emerge man page and use this in the future.

I'd also like to thank you for all your help. As for the problem, I think I may just have to play around a bit and hope i can get things resolved.

All the best.
