I have three gentoo machines with similar configurations. One of the machines doesn't see a package I want to install, while the other machines do. Why does one machine not see the package?

I want to install a new MTA, nbSMTP, on one of the machines, but portage doesn't see it. Specifically:
Code:
 # emerge -s nbsmtp
Searching...
[ Results for search key : nbsmtp ]
[ Applications found : 0 ]

When I type this on my other gentoo machines, where nbSMTP is installed, I get:
Code:
 # emerge -s nbsmtp
Searching...
[ Results for search key : nbsmtp ]
[ Applications found : 1 ]

*  mail-mta/nbsmtp
      Latest version installed: 1.00-r2
      Homepage:      http://nbsmtp.ferdyx.org
Description:   Extremely simple MTA to get mail off the system to a relayhost
      License:       GPL-2

What's going on? I've looked in /etc/make.conf and /etc/portage and don't see anything that can explain what's going on.

About the machine that doesn't see the package:

Code:
# emerge --info

I am afraid that it is your machine which cannot emerge (Timestamp of tree: Sun, 25 Nov 2012 10:45:01 +0000) which is correct.

nbsmtp was removed from the tree on 6th of nov.

That is to say prior to your last sync.

Check the timestamp of your other machines, it is likely to be < 6th of nov.

BTW, you certainly can copy the mail-mta/nbsmtp package's directory & associated distfiles from your "old" machines onto the local overlay & distfiles directory of this one and try to proceed to the emerge but of course, as it is dead upstream,... you'll be on your own.
