Well, at least the error about AIGLX has gone, thanks chithanh.
But still, when I boot the box, I still get this window saying that "X server's start has failed", "Do you want to see thet output log?" saying yes... but there is no output log, then. I log in, execute startx, get X server running fine and producing the above log. Feels like X server is fine. What's screwed is the way it is launched at boot time...

I'm having that problem now too after doing emerge -uDN world. What does your dmesg show? Mine shows this at boot:

Can you try some other login manager, like lxdm or lightdm?

Sorry to post instead of bpaddock: I'm having the same trouble, upgraded xorg to 1.13, did all the module rebuilding and yet gdm won't start. However, since you suggested to use a different login manager, I tried slim and that came up fine, let me login to fluxbox and all is well. So it looks like it's some gdm problem.

I'm also getting the same

I'll give that I try. I do not like that we have to resort to random system changes to get things to work.
It was X that was upgraded, and libc that is crashing, not GDM.

The issue with X vs GDM was explained earlier in this thread and a less than optimal solution is given here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-942824.html

I'm concerned that passing X bad arguments causing it to crash has opened a gaping security hole.

Ahah ! glad (yeah, in some way) to see I'm not the only concerned here. Knew that X wasn't the one to blame.. it pops when startx.
So do I, in dmesg, get these segfault. My first shot had been to check here in the first place, but I'm (way) not sharp enough to diagnose these segfault

I just encountered the same issue on a different system (32bit x86 rather than x86_64), and the "fix" was the same: removed gdm and switched to slim since I didn't need any of the gdm features anyway and am not using gnome either.

Just as gr650, I've switched to slim, and got X running along at boot time. Then, following what thawn had described in here, http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-942824.html, I got back to gdm starting X again, fine, after recompiling it without the accessibility use flag
