Moriah,

Since you have a drive where things work properly, I'd do a diff on the kernels to see what differences exist. Focus on differences in the graphics setup on the kernel. That seems to me to be the most logical place to start.

Cheers,
Pappy

The new setup was obtained by doing a make oldconfig on the old kernel to get the new kernel, after an emerge --sync ; emerge --update --deep --newuse world to update the system. So are you sayinf to diff the .confog's of the 2 kernels, or determine the differences in versions, or what?

Basically, yes, do a diff on the kernel, and focus on the graphics/drm/ and such. Another thing to try would be to take the old kernel source and install it on the newer hard drive with the old .config. If that clears things up, then it's a kernel problem. If not, then it is possible that it might also be a X driver issue as well. It could be one or both, as both have continued to move forward. It will probably be a bit time consuming to figure out, as these kinds of issues usually are.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Pappy

It's a rainy night in Pomona, and the song says it never rains in Southern California. Hah!

On another topic, the hardened-sources folks were hard at it. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r164, 3.2.44-hardened-r1, and 3.8.11-hardened in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Cheers,
Pappy

It's partly cloudy and a comfy-for-sleeping fifty-two degrees Fahrenheit here in Pomona. I beat portage to the punch with my latest additions. I love when that happens. I've just uploaded .configs for 3.0.77, 3.4.44, 3.8.12, and 3.9.1 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Cheers,
Pappy

Our internet connection has been weird for almost a day and a half. It looks as if things have finally been cleared. Had a visit from tuxonice in portage. Long time, no see. I've just uploaded .configs for 3.0.77-gentoo, 3.0.77-tuxonice, 3.4.44-gentoo, 3.4.44-tuxonice, 3.6.11-tuxonice-r1, 3.8.12-gentoo, 3.8.12-tuxonice, 3.9.1-gentoo, 3.9.1-gentoo-r1, and 3.9.1-tuxonice in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Meanwhile, I get to see if anything new has arrived in portage for today.

Cheers,
Pappy

The internet was in a good mood here again today. I like that. It's so much better than what was happening a few hours ago.

Anyway, I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r165, 3.2.44-hardened-r2, 3.8.12-hardened, and 3.9.1-tuxonice-r1 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Leave my computer to entertain an old friend who came into town, and the sources pile up like traffic did on the 210 tonight. I've just uploaded .configs for 3.0.78, 3.0.78-gentoo, 3.0.78-tuxonice, 3.4.45, 3.4.45-gentoo, 3.4.45-tuxonice, 3.8.13, 3.8.13-gentoo, 3.8.13-tuxonice, 3.9.2, 3.9.2-gentoo, and 3.9.2-tuxonice in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Some of the sources for this arrived a couple days ago. I was busy, busy, busy with my van, so they stuck around in a semi finished form for a bit. Now, they are at last ready. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r166, 3.0.79, 3.0.79-gentoo, 3.2.45-hardened, 3.4.46, 3.4.46-gentoo, 3.9.2-hardened, 3.9.3, and 3.9.3-gentoo in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Cheers,
Pappy

I'm currently hanging out in Mendocino County with the friend written of earlier. It's a good thing that I have Linux. I can ssh to my system, and do the updates from here. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r167, 3.0.80, 3.0.80-gentoo, 3.2.45-hardened-r1, 3.4.47, 3.4.47-gentoo, 3.9.4, 3.9.4-gentoo, and 3.9.4-hardened in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Sadly, this is my last day in Mendocino County. Next stop, a Saturday in San Francisco, then home. Productive work got accomplished, so all is well. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r168, 3.2.45-hardened-r2, and 3.9.4-hardened-r1 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Back in Pomona, and working on something that gets better mileage than a Ford van. Said van will be up for sale as soon as its title gets here. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r169, 3.2.46-hardened, and 3.9.4-hardened-r2 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

I've got a lot of seeds today. They were fresher yesterday, but I was wiped out after installing windows 7 on a computer for a friend. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r171, 3.0.83, 3.0.83-gentoo, 3.2.47, 3.2.47-gentoo, 3.2.47-hardened, 3.4.50, 3.4.50-gentoo, 3.9.6-hardened, 3.9.7, and 3.9.7-gentoo in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

I have kvm running under 3.7.10-gentoo-r1 on my core2duo laptop with 8 gb ram, and although my x86_64 3.8.13-gentoo guest runs fine with the virtio network driver, I am having trouble with my win-xp and win-7 guests. Both of these vm's are currently running the default windows network drivers, which is an RTL8139 on the win-xp vm, and an RTL8139C+ on the win-7 vm.

The problem is that when transfering a large amount of data at high speed (trying to restore 100 gb of files to the vm from my backup server), the vm's network stalls and refuses to work again until a full power down of the vm and a power back up; a simple restart foes not fix it.

I have tried to install the windows virtio network drivers, but they will not install. I fetched the .iso file dated April 2013 from the redhad site, which claims to be the latest, but the windows devide manager and new hardware wizard cannot install the driver.

Has anyone else seen this? Do I have the wrong drivers?

I would be satisfied at this point if I could just get the default network drivers to work reliably, as I need these windows guests.

Any suggestions as to how to make this work?

I know this is kind of off-topic for this thread, but there are a number of very knowledgable people that frequent this thread, and I am desperate for a solution.

PS: Moriah, I don't exactly know, but you are right that some of the brightest here come to visit this thread. It's a bit off topic, but I don't think anyone will lose sleep over it. I know I won't. Good luck.

I got it to load. See:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-962508-highlight-.html

I still need to stress test it.

Papy don't suppose you have a kernel seed for a Acer Aspire V3-571 - laptop - looking at the debian site yours links to for checking lspci -n it looks like it should be posiible to use my old laptops kernel .config and make a few changes, but things are never as they seem, just wondering what your thoughts are on this?

Will post the relevant info so you can check my old config you have a copy of and see if this is indeed do able :)

As long as the devices in lspci -n agree with one another, you should be able to use the .config on more than one machine. Be sure to change any file system or CPU differences, and check /var/log/dmesg to be sure that indeed all the proper drivers loaded.

Cheers,
Pappy

The "stable" virtio network driver for windows under kvm works. It passed over 100 gb of data at over 250 Gbits/sec. 8)

Finally! A workable win-xp installation under kvm. :D

We have a blast from the past in today's seeds. I just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32.61, 2.6.32-hardened-r172, 3.0.84, 3.0.84-gentoo, 3.2.47-hardened-r2, 3.4.51, 3.4.51-gentoo, 3.9.7-hardened-r1, 3.9.8, and 3.9.8-gentoo in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Moriah,

Congrats. One of these days, I might get back into playing with virtual machines, and I'll definitely be asking you for pointers.

Cheers,
Pappy
