Hi, I'm thinking of creating a separate mount for /usr/portage/profiles on an SD card to speed up emerge syncing.

Is this a reasonable idea and any tips?

Thanks.

no it is not.

profiles change rarely, and the usual performance of an SD card compared to HDD or SSD is poor.

Mounting the entireity of /usr/portage on external media does have its benefits sometimes. I did this for a while with a small reiserfs partition on a very portable USB drive I keep on me. It was pretty hany, as I have two laptops, and only had to sync once.
The disadvantages of this are obvious, though. Syncing isn't fast, and read times suffer quite a bit. I also had one or two times when I booted up my netbook, was about to -uDN world, and then realised "f---, I left portage at home."
