problems loggin in with squirrelmail

I just installed the postfix / courier-imap / squirrelmail combo, but now I'm having difficulties logging into squirrelmail. After putting in username and password, I get:
"ERROR You must be logged in to access this page." I looked around the forums, and found this one:

I'm using the php-4.2.2 ebuild and mod_php-4.2.2, which apparently fixes the problem with "register_globals" being set to off in the php.ini. I double checked the file, and sure enough register_globals is set to On. Other than that, I have no idea what's wrong. Thanks in advance.
