DVD crashes Smplayer & VLC but plays in Xine

I rented "The Avengers" from Redbox yesterday. It caused both Smplayer and VLC to crash, but played just fine in Xine. Under what conditions would a DVD crash Smplayer and VLC but play in Xine?

I wish I had gotten terminal output from Smplayer and VLC, but I've returned the DVD, so I don't have that.
