It looks as if the packages virtualbox-bin and firefox-bin don't clash with the full virtualbox
and firefox versions - at least, emerge doesn't complain when I pretend to install them.
I haven't tried a full install since this is a lightweight machine (which is why I use the -bin
packages) but shouldn't emerge take notice of the clash? Is there some flag I can set
to make it do do?

Will

At least in the case of firefox-bin, no it shouldn't clash and this is by design (I maintain firefox-bin). The biggest reason i can think to have them side-by-side in the case of Firefox is performance testing for compiled version vs precompiled version. Alternatively, if you decide to switch from one to the other, it's painless rather than needing to uninstall all the time. There's no reason (Again, in the case of firefox) to make them clash since firefox-bin's binary is /usr/bin/firefox-bin and all its data is in /opt and firefox's binary is /usr/bin/firefox and all its data is in /usr (and the menu entries are different too).

Thanks - ISTR that at one point they did block each other, but if the Firefoxes now use different
directories for data storage there seems, as you say, no reason for them to do so.

Thanks for the summary - Will
