Uim. I also tried ibus. I'm so slowly advancing in configs...
Who used it and reconfigures a couple of times, please help me in key points (localization for input). Fonts are installed. How to attach fonts. Is tray needed (emerge trayer . ). Openbox. Ctrl+space isn't switching.
kinput2 canna ibus scim uim ibus .. all different programs are running but result is 0 (ZERO!).
locale.gen (OK) xorg.conf en,jp,ru.
/etc/conf.d/consolefont (where and how to write to it after emerge media-fonts/efont-unicode

http://bpaste.net/show/54416/ - grep /fonts from x log

Just help me from the very beginning, can you? I'm so eager to type them for my study!
Thankfully yours.

Well, I've never used uim. But I have scim working. Maybe my scim setup will help you with uim, since they should be similar.

So, for scim to work I've installed following packages
scim, scim-anthy, scim-bridge, anthy.

After that I made sure that my locale is en_US.UTF-8

Finally I've added to environment following variables
export QT_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d" XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
