I fiddled around a bit and unmerged sys-dev/shadow, pam, and few more packages, but not openssh... then accidently closed ssh shell and here i am. When I try to login nothing happens, on local terminal or from openssh. I know there are instructions to chroot from a live cd in gentoo handbook, but is there another way.

How to get back into root shell?

Here are instructions for booting into single user mode on Gentoo. As a last resort you can try adding init=/bin/bash as a boot parameter but the system won't be fully functional.

Yeah, forgot about single user mode. Though I couldn't emerge from it, init=/bin/bash gave me a more useful shell, but then I thought of chrooting from a live USB, which saved me this time.
Thanks to both!

Is there perhaps a third way?

The third way is combined, boot up in single user mode, remove root password from /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, reboot without password, fix the box, reset the root password.
