Okay, my Google skills are lacking, and this has always driven me nuts.

Why do these drives always want to shut themselves when you open them just after powering a computer?
Obviously, you are trying to either put a CD in or take one out, so shouldn't it stand to reason that you don't want the damned thing to close itself after you open it?

I would love to smack the guy responsible for this behavior.

I'd suppose that the controller resets the drive to make sure everything is sane and the drive swallows the tray during that reset because that's seems like the logical default? Haven't used one in some time so I barely recall the frustration ;)

USB's and PXE booting has replaced CD's/DVD's for me.

Yeah, I don't have need for it much these days either, so this more often happens to me when I forget a DVD movie that I need to return to someone.
It's not such a big deal, although it does happen to be one of my oldest pet peeves.

The worst part is that stupid rubber band that always dry rots after a few years so that the tray won't open and close. Who invented that shit?

my NEC 3500 is now working for... I dunno - 6 years? 7?

And it still works. Ok, most of the time it is off, being bannished to an usb enclosere many years ago. But I use it to watch the occasional DVD (like Deadliest Catch Season 7)...

edit: more like 7 or 8 years old.... wow.

There actually was a contraption like that? I've had 5 burners and at least 3 readers throughout the last 10 years. Opened at least half of them at some point. None had a rubber band...seriously?

I've seen a few like that. Most use plastic cogs or a rack though.

It's probably a self-test and beyond control, and I haven't tried this, but maybe it's just the BIOS polling for a potential boot disk, and maybe if you completely disable booting from CD-ROM and take it out of the boot device order it won't do it.

Best drive I had was a Pioneer which had the same feed system as most car cd players. Lasted about 6 years, but was much better than most tray loaders that like to eat cables. The only issue was it was hard to see if a disc was already in the drive, but it was impossible to insert a second disc anyway so no big issue.

The good thing about those is nobody mistakes them for cup holders.

I thought about that, but I'm always too lazy to test it. That, and I like having it in my boot sequence.

I think it is a firmware thing. You power the drive up, it closes its tray.

If that's the case, it would be nice if it did not allow you to open the drive until it was done with its firmware shenanigans.

You just have to be quick and dexterous. Press the power button, and as soon as the drawer is open, slap that disc in there (or take it out) before it closes.
