I just installed adobe reader from the adobe website(using the tar.gz file) however, it fails to start
here's what I get when trying to run from the terminal
dirname: missing operand
Try 'dirname --help' for more information.
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread: error while loading shared libraries: libgdk_pixbuf_xlib-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

thanks
Adel

Acrobat Reader is actually in Gentoo's Portage as app-text/acroread. It makes it a lot easier to install as it also pulls in dependencies (like for this case, x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf) and at least warn you of any that require special USE flags that are needed.

So try

emerge acroread

That's the danger of running the "install" script of a lot of third party programs, they don't offer or they don't always clean up properly. I'd probably start with rm -r /opt/Adobe/Reader9 and hope it doesn't break anything. Likely it will...

You might just want to emerge that other package to satisfy the dependency and use what you have installed... that's the other way of dealing with the problem :D
