Hello friends,
I cant get desktop effects to turn on in KDE.

Code:
mike@gentoo ~ $ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 (RV280 5960) x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL DRI2
mike@gentoo ~ $

Seems it should turn on fine. Any idea where I should start looking? Xorg.0.log looks fine I think.

Code:
gentoo mike # eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   xorg-x11 *
gentoo mike #

Is that correct?

In system settings there are three different versions of opengl none work. the error I get is
Code:

Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.

Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.

I got this to work by toggling all the effects off first with ctrl+shift+f12 and then switching. Otherwise I would get exactly the same error. However, every log in my chosen wallpaper was reset to the default (which I don't like at all), couldn't figureout how to fix it so I didn't stick with it.
Might be worth a try.

have you tried unmasking xorg-server and mesa? Or, if you
are using unmasked versions, dropping back to stable
(I had to do the latter with my new notebook which is
intel video)

Thanks for your input. With that said, there comes a time when you just should upgrade so I did. I threw in an nvidia gforce 6200 card changed the setup and problem is solved. This just wasn't worth the trouble. Thanks.
