For whatever reason, when I attempt to run make in order to compile the HPLIP driver for my printer, I keep getting this error: Code: |
$ make -f Makefile.am
Makefile.am:24: *** missing separator. Stop. |
The makefile is here: http://bpaste.net/show/49550/
What's going wrong, and how can I fix it? |

Why are you doing this by hand? Its in portage, the current versions are net-print/hplip-3.12.9-r2 (unstable) net-print/hplip- 3.12.9-r1 (stable) _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

I tried doing it by hand merely because a): I didn't know it was in Portage (needless to say, I haven't been using Gentoo for very long... ) and b): I was following the instructions on the HPLIP website, where I originally found the driver. http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/gentoo.html
I did just try to emerge the package, but I got this error: Code: |
$ emerge net-print/hplip-3.12.9-r1
!!! 'net-print/hplip-3.12.9-r1' is not a valid package atom.
!!! Please check ebuild(5) for full details. |
I got the same thing for net-print/hplip-3.12.9-r2 as well. What's going on here? |

The problem is that <package>-<version> is not quite complete. In general, its best to just use emerge <package> so that portage will update it. If you have need a specific package, you can do that with emerge =<package>-<version> (note the equals sign) and portage will keep that specific version even if updates are available.
Sorry for being unclear. I thought you may have been looking for a specific version.
In general, you can usually find packages for any applicant you want in portage by using the search feature emerge -s <package> or by using Google. In general one of the first few hits will be packages.gentoo.org which will tell you what the package name is and what versions are available. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
