Quick heads up. If you want empathy to work with your google account make sure
net-voip/telepathy-gabble

is installed. For some reason there is no dependency between empathy and this. Without this the new integration with gnome-online-accounts wont work right.

After you install empathy, the ebuild prints the following message:

* Empathy needs telepathy's connection managers to use any IM protocol.
* See the USE flags on net-im/telepathy-connection-managers
* to install them.

And telepathy-gabble is pulled in by telepathy-connection-managers with USE=jabber.

Unfortunately, we don't have a "suggested dependencies" mechanism in ebuilds (although there are discussions about adding one), so post-install messages like this are the best that we can do at the moment. (An alternative solution would be to add a jabber USE flag to empathy itself - but that would result in portage performing completely unnecessary recompilation of empathy when you change your USE flags to add or remove some IM protocols.)

So make sure to read the messages that are printed after you finish emerging!
