The assembly's choice earned only 457 votes in the online poll, where it was easily outshone by other proposed names, including "Maria Theresa" after an Austro-Hungarian empress and "the Devinska cycling bridge" in honour of a nearby village.
"We have unanimously voted for the Freedom Cycling-Bridge," Bratislava region chairman Pavol Freso told reporters.
"It truly is a place where people were running for freedom through barbed wire, it is a place where many have died, so this is a dignified way how to honour these people."
Slovakia, once part of the former Czechoslovakia, has a 107 km border with Austria and many people died trying to flee the communist regime before its collapse in 1989. |

Still better than voting down millions of dollars in expenditures only to have city council do it any way.

Well, considering these politicians obviously ignored the "voice of the people", how is this superior?

Take capital punishment. If there has been a mass murder, then people will probably clamour for the death penalty. If there has been a wrongly convicted person put to death, then people will clamour for a cessation of the death penalty. Good government is a bit more long sighted than that, ideally  Such is modern democracy.
In this case the government there deciding that naming the bridge as a remembrance device, rather than after a man who has been reduced in recent times to an internet meme, is a good idea in my not so humble opinion. |
