PostPosted: Sat Sep 22, 2012 3:54 pm    Post subject: "Startx" works fine from console, but can't boot t Reply with quote

Ok, problem is when I boot my laptop, it comes up to the graphic login, I can login with either root or my user and I get the same result, which is a blank black screen with the basic "X" as the mouse pointer.

However, if from that point I use ctrl+alt+F1 for the console, login in with either root or user, then type "startx" Xfce4 comes up fine. As a matter of fact I am posting this from my Xfce interface. Not sure what logs to post... I have searched the forums for this issue, but have only found the opposite, where "startx" doesn't work.

I am new to linux, though I have built this system using kern 3.6 using the gentoo handbook. Have other issues I need to attend to but this is priority so it can boot into X with no problems...

Thanx Everyone,
Phil

ok, followed the instructions there, I found where I had missed the "" in 90xsession but hasn't helped the issue at all. Figured I would post what I have for the .conf files I know of that control this....

Code:

*/etc/init.d/90xsession*
XSESSION="xfce4"

*/etc/conf.d/xdm*
# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you haven't accidentally configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | gpe | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
DISPLAYMANAGER="slim"

*make.conf/ USE="mmx sse sse2 udev -gnome -kde -minimal -qt4 dbus jpeg lock session :startup-notification thunar X branding"
