I'm having a problem, trying to mount and rip a DVD, which I never had before.

Code:
# mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd/
mount: unknown filesystem type '(null)'

Nothing shows up in `dmesg`, all options in kernel for optical filesystems are built-in, handbrake also doesn't find anything, but the dvd plays in a normal player(xbox360) just fine.

Is my drive giving up or what is that? The dvd is no blockbuster, it's just work material, so I don't think there would be any fancy protection on it.

Edit, tried with another dvd, working just fine.
Edit2, cat and dd both report no medium found.

avx,

Are you reading the DVD with a DVD read only drive or a DVD writer of some sort?

Some DVD Readers calibrate half way between the inner and outer tracks. Thats OK for pressed DVDs but the calibration fails on a DIY DVD that doesn't have any data there.
DVD read only drives often won't read media that has not been closed as the index is not yet written. You normally need to read such media in a writer.

Lastly DVD+R and DVD-R drives don't play nicely with one anothers unclosed media.

The drive is a DVD DL burner from Samsung the DVD in question is a pressed, not selfmade(it's a company conference/workshop recording).

avx,

No medium found suggests that the drive cannot even see the DVD.

When you inset a DVD (or a CD) the drive should spin up while it detected the media. With a defective DVD the drive should have several goes at this process before it gives up.
You hear the difference between a 'good' disc and a dud. Do the compare yourself for a know good DVD and your dud.

This is pure media/drive and has nothing to do with any software that might be on your system.

Well, the light on the drive blinks for a while (~10s) and I can hear some silent spinning, not as much/loud as with other disks, though.

Still, nothing shows up, even tried in Windows and with AnyDVD, no chance. Tried a few other discs, they all work, but the disc in question does work in Xbox and a JVC player, just not in my pc drive.

The disklabel states it's been pressed by mediabit.de, but I couldn't find any helpful info on their page(yes, I speak german).

Ok, problem solved. It's some kind of weird copy protection, a friends drive could read it. Out of 14 pc-drives tested, 8 failed to read the disc. No clue what they are thinking and how they can be allowed to use the DVD-logo, but AnyDVD to the rescue.

So, pissed off, but solved.

Hello all,

Total noob here. Just thought I should warn you.

I am having a similar problem. I connected a USB DVD/CD device to my Suse server. I tried mounting it as stated above, but when I ran the command

mount -r -t auto /dev/sr0 /media/dvd

I received the message

mount: No medium found.

I have a data DVD in the drive. What am I doing wrong?
