What's a good answer to this question? Or at least, what themes should you hit when you get asked it during job interviews.

I've been asked this a number of times now, but I never feel like I nailed it.

"Doesn't matter. I'll be on high-powered position in a few months here, and will show you how it's done."

If the truth means you don't get a particular job, this is probably a blessing in disguise. If it happens a lot, you are probably in the wrong career.
I'd imagine most people never learn the exact reason they didn't get a job. But that aside, how does that lead you to believe it is the wrong career?

How about this for an answer.

I really want someone who will work 'with' me, rather than someone who is trying to manage me.

"work with me" doesn't sound bad, but "rather than trying to manage me" sounds like you'd be difficult.

yes, your right.

"I'd like someone who can manage me by working 'with' me"

edit: It sounds like I'm trying to say "I want someone who will work with me, rather than against me"

"The sooner you realize we're equals, the better off you'll be."

lol

I think I know what you're getting at, but I'm not sure how to reword it.

Actually, being "managed" ain't so bad if the person managing you is your senior in terms of experience, is good at his job, and the ehtos of the company you work for is that you can develop as a person. You can simply focus at your part, and let somebody else work with coordinating other people and processes around you.

Unfortunately, those kinds of managers are in clear minority, since management position is to narcisstic assholes like a honey is to a bear.

the inspiration for this answer came from this blog post

Quote:
Also, back in those days, the rule of thumb was a manager could manage at most 7-8 direct reports. Today this number is much higher. Of course, the role of the manager often changes from that of a coach who is involved with you day-to-day to one of someone who does your annual review and who you call on when there is trouble. This is not all good, people tell me they feel at times like their manager is on the ocean liner shouting down at them through a megaphone, “Hope it goes well, good luck”, as opposed to being in the rowboat with them, rowing in tandem with them. Personally, like it when my manager is in the boat too!

but, yeah, I agree, it does sound terrible to say it in an interview.
