After installing Gentoo in a laptop I realized that I had not configured the kernel with the necessary driver for the wireless card. In the first boot of the system, doing ifconfig -a did not reveal the device. So I thought it clever to enable in the kernel all of the wireless drivers of Intel (that is the kind of card this laptop has). But now I have my doubts about proceeding this way. Is it an error-safe move, or totally unrecommended?

By the way, the wireless card cannot be recognized still, even when all of the drivers of its kind are loaded in the kernel.

jose.maria ...

You should probably provide details of the specific card the laptop has. Its probably just a case of missing the ipw* firmware, and knowing the card would help in pointing you in the direction of that firmware.

Yeah, thanks. My main point is about the first question: is it good method to enable several or all of the drivers of a device in the kernel? Just to make sure one works. Or can this give rise to conflicts?

Regarding the wireless card, I managed to configure it by reading another post of this forum.

jose.maria ... there should be no conflict but the additional drivers are about as usefull as an ironing board at a picnic :)

These drivers will take additional resources to compile, store, etc ... so just select the one suitable for your card.

Code:
emerge linux-firmware
reboot
has a good chance of providing the missing firmware and loading a working driver
