I would think so as you will only be using one boot loader and the kernel names/versions will determine which is booted.
Ps its probably easier to install Ubuntu after Gentoo for this if you are unsure of what you are doing as the Ubuntu installer will give you the option for this and configure it automatically.

Hi,
sharing any system directory between operating systems can cause conflicts. The main one is that one operating system can overwrite, delete a file or directory use by an other one. Most of the packages managers will ask, not install or update a package in that case. You can use one boot loader for all operating systems. Me I do not share /boot directory even not the /home directory because differents versions of softwares can need differents configurations files.

appofice,

Its safe to share /boot and <swap>. If your /tmp is on its own partition, you may be able to share it too as /tmp is usually wiped at boot time.

Do not share /home unless you take steps to keep the settings files apart.
Nothing else can be shared.

I share the swap but we have to remember that when we hibernate we must not boot on an other operating system that share the swap before resuming the hibernated one. In that case the resuming process will fail after with the for possible need to check filesystems.

Logicien

This would be a separate discussion, please stick to the initial question.

Yes, I do. I just copied the /boot kernel files from the Ubuntu /boot directory to
the /boot partition I use for Gentoo (and everything else), and updated grub.conf
accordingly. I can't remember which Grub Ubuntu 10.04 uses, but my Gentoo system
uses Grub 0.97.

I didn't use Ubuntu's UUIDs, just the actual partition names, but I don't see why UUIDs
wouldn't work.

Ubuntu 10.04 uses Grub 1.98 (grub 2)

Could someone share experience having Grub 2 as boot manager please?

I was thinking about switching to it but not sure if it's worth the effort.
My motivation was Grub 2's ability to use some bootable ISO image as a virtual boot device, does that really work?
