The upgrade worked fine on my amd64 machine but not so much
for my x86 notebook. Here's the error which occurs while emerging
texlive-basic-2009:

The tex.log mentioned just has the last few lines above that end with "no pages of output".

I suggest you try first to upgrade poppler to the latest unstable and then reemerge luatex. After this, I suppose texlive-basic should work.
I not, please try to find the place in the log which documents what failed with the luatex format (it must be much earlier in the logs).
