1. I am running Google Chrome. When I go to Youtube and try watching a video, I get no sound. I know that ALSA is working because Pianobar works nicely.
2. Can I use ALSA for Skype, or is Pulseaudio required?

Try running chrome from the command-line - hopefully it will show an error message.

Skype works fine with ALSA - doesn't need pulseaudio.

1. you need use dmix for mixing
i.e. my /etc/asound.conf with dmix and system-wide equalizer aka alsaequal
Code:
pcm.!default {
  type             plug
  slave.pcm       "plugequal"
}

pcm.dmixer {
  type dmix
  ipc_key 1024
  slave {
    pcm 'hw:0'
    format S32_LE
    rate 44100
  }
}

ctl.dmixer {
  type hw
  card 0
  device 0
}

pcm.dsp {
  type plug
  slave.pcm "dmixer"
}

ctl.equal {
  type equal;
#  library "/usr/lib/ladspa/electrode_eq.so"
#  module "electrode_eq"
}

pcm.plugequal {
  type equal;
#  library "/usr/lib/ladspa/electrode_eq.so"
#  module "electrode_eq"
  slave.pcm "plug:dmixer";
}

pcm.equal {
  type plug;
  slave.pcm plugequal;
}

I will give both of these a try in the next few hours.
Ok, so I tried going into Chrome to watch a video, and it worked...
