Hello all,

I recently ditched XFCE for an Openbox-only window manager, and with it I decided to get rid of NetworkManager in favor of wicd.

It seems to work just fine, except after a period of inactivity, the WiFi connection is dropped.

I have tried multiple networks, and the behavior is the same across the board, although all are using WPA2 (I cannot access networks that use other/no encryptions).

I have found that if I ping google (or some other server, the connection seems to be much more stable, and will stay up (so far it's been up for a half hour which is significantly longer than average before).

I have enabled auto-reconnect, however it doesn't seem to work very well.

Since I don't know too much about wicd, I'm not sure what exactly to post about it other than the symptoms, but hopefully someone else has run across this and has some tips. I am using the GTK interface of it. If this doesn't work, I may just jump to something else. Thanks!

What do you have under the "advanced" and "external" tabs? I'll compare it to mine and maybe that will help you figure it out.

My external settings are the same as yours, but these are my advanced settings:

Driver: wext
Backend: external
Debug: unchecked
Use dBm: unchecked
Ping static: checked

Try adjusting your driver or backend and see if that helps. I never get disconnected unless I tell it to do so.

I switched from ioctl to external just now, and it seems to be performing well so far. Thanks for the tip! It would have probably disconnected by now.
