well, this is a first attempt with Gentoo... downloaded minimum ppc disc and made copy and booted the circa year 2000 mac powerbook on it.
it stalls at step
| Quote: | attempting to mount media /dev/hdc
!!media not found
!!could not find cd to boot, something else needed
>>determining root device
!!could not find the root block device in .
please specify another (etc...) |
as it is running on the cd, I dunno why it can't find what it's running on....
any suggestions? Many thanks
Later .... not expecting you to know the ins and outs of this old (if popular) machine, but I've no idea what terms like "root block device" and "/dev/hdc" mean, and searching for them doesn't yield much joy. So any general help as to what these terms mean, I might be able to use my own savvy.

I'm manually typing screen messages, as I'm not using the computer in question for this, and at meoment it's not networked.

Trev ...
the "root block device" is where the CD filesystem is located and "/dev/hdc" is (or should be) the device representing the CD drive. This sounds as if the devices are in a muddle, which as I remember was an issue of yore. Its sometime since I've had anything to do with PPC, but I seem to remember there was an issue with ATA (hardisk) and ATAPI (cdrom) getting in a tizzy.
If you have a USB cdrom drive then I would try booting from that ... at least thats the easiest solution. If not then a search for 'hda hdc reversed' might reveal a better solution .. too much crab juice, my memory has gone, sorry.
HTH & best ...

Not sure how flexible the minimum ppc disc is when it comes to older *books.
To get a Gentoo emerged you only need at least any working Live-CD. So I was often using Live-CDs of popular distributions such as Ubuntu, which also has X and lots of tools which our minimal disc does not have. As of today they still maintain some PPC live discs. So give it a try... _________________ ppc:PowerBook5,8 15"(1440)-G4/1.67, 2G(dev.notes[pdf]) | amd64:Core2Duo | amd64-prefix:OpenSuse@Core2Quad | Lila-Theme |
