Hi,

since I never can remember how to set up a git repo on my server so that i can push to that, I always follow a tutorial[1] and it gets me where I want.
Lately I noticed a slight difference in the behavior (well, actually it's only the look) of my repos and some of the public FLOSS git repos I use.
FLOSS repo:
Code:
$ git branch -a
* master
  remotes/origin/HEAD -> origin/master
$

my repo:
Code:
$ git branch -a
* master
  remotes/origin/master
$

the local .git/config looks identical in both cases:
Code:
$ cat .git/config
[core]
   repositoryformatversion = 0
   filemode = true
   bare = false
   logallrefupdates = true
[remote "origin"]
   url = <censored-git-url>
   fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*
[branch "master"]
   remote = origin
   merge = refs/heads/master
$

To be honest, I don't know what difference that makes, but I'd be interested in the details.
Unfortunately I didn't find anything in the docs, most likely because I don't know for what to search.

Thanks in advance for all hints.

I'm not a total git expert. But I think the difference between the two might be that in the local case you said 'git branch master' instead of 'git checkout master'. Either way, I don't think it makes a big difference. Makes more of a difference when you do your push command.
