Hello,
I've read your tutorial : it is really well written and explains important steps. A sort of handbook with audio informations. _________________ Kind regards,

|
The tarball now contains the following additions:
LV2 and JACK demo versions of the following LinuxDSP software:
Guitar FX
(LV2 plugins or:
/usr/bin/cr1-x86-64
/usr/bin/dt1-x86-64
/usr/bin/ph1-x86-64
/usr/bin/wah1-x86-64)
AF2-10 Graphical EQ and FFT Analyzer (LV2 plugin or /opt/linuxdsp-jack-applications/af210-x86-64)
BLACK-EQ2 Graphical EQ (LV2 plugin or /opt/linuxdsp-jack-applications/black-eq2-x86-64)
FC70 Fairchild Limiter (LV2 plugin or /opt/linuxdsp-jack-applications/fc70-x86-64)
MBC2B Multiband Compressor (LV2 plugin or /opt/linuxdsp-jack-applications/mbc2b-x86-64)
PEQ-2A Vintage Program EQ (LV2 plugin or /opt/linuxdsp-jack-applications/peq-2a-x86-64)
SR2B Stereo Reverb (LV2 plugin or /opt/linuxdsp-jack-applications/sr2b-x86-64)
VC2B Vintage Compressor (LV2 plugin or /opt/linuxdsp-jack-applications/vc2b-x86-64)
LV2 only (no JACK versions available) versions of the following LinuxDSP software:
DYN4000 Console Dynamics
DYN500 Console Dynamics
LinuxDSP DSR500 De-esser (Free)
The demo versions mute their output briefly every 60 seconds. To purchase the unrestricted versions, go to http://linuxdsp.co.uk. Each plugin costs 20 or 25 GBP or about 35 USD. I use some of them myself and they are the best plugins for their functions I've ever used.
PCManFM has been upgraded to to 1.2.0
Ardour 3 from has been downgraded from svn to 3.5.357, which is the latest official version
The "update" script has been updated to version 9999 (svn). It seems to work better than the "stable" version.
The following packages have been added:
multimux
chordii
cmix
icecream
takcd
wildmidi
shell-fm
pnmixer
waon
ezstream
playitslowly
guayadeque
projectm-jack
horgand

Hi Audiodef:
I'm very new to gentoo, but I was tired of ubuntu based audio distros and wanted to try something new. The install guide is great. I was up and running in just a weekend. There have been a few things I've seen and I need some help with. Is this the best place for feature requests etc? I submitted a bug or 2 in bugs.gentoo.org but they haven't gotten any attention.
So far my list of problems has been:
installing guitarix, zita-convolver has been updated and the old version has been removed causing the wget of the emerge to fail (I worked around it with a local overlay)
installing the carla plugin host (I just installed from source)
libgig (linuxsampler) I need the svn version to get sfz support (unresolved)
If theres a better place for me to ask questions on how to fix this stuff, let me know. Thanks. _________________ later,

libgig doesn't have any use flags other than doc, even for the svn 9999 version. Does the svn version automatically include sfz support? |
I haven't figured out how to install svn version yet. I have libgig-3.3.0. Is the 9999 ebuild in a different overlay?
UPDATE:
I just added the libgig and linuxsampler 9999 ebuilds from this overlay https://gitorious.org/gentoo-misc-overlay/gentoo-misc-overlay/source/4a254036ca2e0e520e15b45bd9ea9f7e641034c6:
to a local overlay, libgig installed fine but trying to emerge linuxsampler failed on some of the patches (filter.h.patch). I'm out of time to work on it tonight, but if there's a better way to approach it please let me know.
Thanks! _________________ later,

audiodef wrote: | You don't need an extra overlay for the 9999 versions of libgig and linuxsampler. They're in the pro-audio overlay. Just add those packages to package.keywords with the ~amd64 or ** keyword (probably the latter) and emerge them. I think with the ** keyword, you get the 9999 version automatically. Double-check by doing
Code: |
emerge -pv =libgig-9999
|
and notice which keyword it tells you you need. |
Ok. That worked for libgig. Now with linuxsampler-9999 I'm experiencing this bug described here: https://bugs.linuxsampler.org/cgi-bin/show_bug.cgi?id=226
I've installed bison, flex and sqlite but no dice, Still getting that same error as in that report. Any ideas?
Thanks for your support! _________________ later,

Using the qsampler lv2 plugin for hosting sfz files in ardour is pretty much a must have for my workflow. It uses the linuxsampler backend which requires svn builds for sfz sample support. I'll keep trying when I get a chance. _________________ later,

I took a look at it on my own system. Does linuxsampler compile fail for you like this?
Code: |

# ALSA: yes, JACK: yes, CoreMIDI: no, MME: no, MidiShare: no
#-------------------------------------------------------------------
# Audio Output Drivers:
# ALSA: yes, JACK: yes, ARTS: no, CoreAudio: no, ASIO: no

# Sampler Engines:
# GIG: yes, SF2: yes, SFZ: yes

# Effect plugin systems for internal effects:
# LADSPA: yes

#-------------------------------------------------------------------#

Good. Now type 'make' to compile, followed by 'make install' as root.

Yep. Same error about parser.h. A quick search yielded that bug report from a few weeks ago and they presecribe flex, but that didn't fix it for me, unless flex requires a reboot or something. _________________ later,

This looks fantastic. I am looking to move from manjaro to gentoo and looks like it could be the right step in that direction for me but I have a few questions about it.
Is there a list of all the programs that the stage4 install process provides?
In manjaro I have always tried to keep a minimal system and generally use cli apps rather than gui versions, partly to make sure updates are not massive and to keep my system quick and light. As far as music goes I really only use Renoise these days, along with lots of (linux)vsts, ladspa and dssi stuff. I'm really in two minds about whether I need or want everything under the sun installed. It would certainly be nice to have it all there and to be able to try things out (like ingen which I have always had trouble installing) but I'm a little concerned about updates and compiling lots of heavy things that I never use.
What DE does it install? I saw a mention of LXDE but I can't find anything definite, unless I am missing or not understanding something and it doesn't come with any?
Edit: I forgot to ask, does Cadence work ok in gentoo? I have always preferred it over qjackctl and makes bridging alsa very easy. |

No, but I keep meaning to make one. There's a text file that shows up on the desktop after install, but I need to do better about keeping it updated.

Updates on Gentoo sometimes need troubleshooting just like anywhere else, but the good thing is, if the update fails, the existing version continues to work. Portage doesn't zap an existing version of installed software before updating. As for quick and light, that's a function of what runs in RAM, and even with "everything installed", Gentoo Studio stays quick and light because it doesn't load a bunch of bells and whistles into memory unless for your own reasons you tell it to. There's an update script that makes updates easier, too, and once you get past the beginning where it asks you if you're sure you want to proceed, you can let it run overnight. I use this to update the tarball and I never find it necessary to let it run that long. It usually doesn't take longer than half an hour, and that's when something big like gcc, glibc or webkit-gtk updates - which is infrequently, anyway.

Gentoo Studio uses LXDE for the stage4 tarball, but you can install any DE/WM you want. I plan to add Fluxbox and a few other lightweight DE's/WM's to the tarball, if they aren't in there already, but adding them yourself is easy.
spectromas wrote: | Edit: I forgot to ask, does Cadence work ok in gentoo? I have always preferred it over qjackctl and makes bridging alsa very easy. |
That sounds familiar. I think I was looking into including it in the tarball. It's just a matter of when.
You can "install" Gentoo Studio the manual way, which takes a little time but lets you completely customize everything. Which in your case means you can keep it as minimal as possible. For that you'd follow the "manual install" guide. But I really recommend the stage4 installation, because like you said, some things are tricky to install and when I get it solved, I add it to the tarball so users don't have to deal with finicky packages.
I hope this helps - let me know if you have more questions. _________________ decibel Linux: https://decibellinux.org
