so upgrading devlibs/libpcre caused a big problem on my system...
I tried to go back to the previous version by masking the latest, but this is what has happened...now nothing will emerge

| Have you tried running revdep-rebuild? That should identify the broken packages, including the ones shown in the output above, and schedule a rebuild on them. |

I don't know your architecture, this is how it's setup on x86_64. You might just have /lib on x86 in which case leave off the '64'.

I dunno! The link looks OK. I always try this as a last resort

It will install all dependencies for dev-libs/libpcre-8.21 first. If that's not the version you want, just replace it with the correct one.

I have no idea why this happened...I masked the latest libcpre, but it wouldn't even rebuild 8.21, then nothing would build...except bzip...findutils and autoconf gave me the same grep errors...

I'm at a total loss here What did you do that started this catastrophe? An emerge update, installing a package, emerge --depclean ?
I've never encountered a system that degraded to such a level. |

I was doing an emerge -avuDN world, then looking for packages that weren't stable...I didn't want to downgrade too far, so I just chose to mask the latest libpcre, but it rebuilt anyway...needless to say, it didn't build, now I'm having so many problems, in fact just now khtml started to complain...
help!

The root of the problem appears to be that the OP built a new libpcre, then built grep to use that libpcre, then downgraded libpcre, so now grep is broken.
Rebooting is not the solution. The two possible solutions are to install the new libpcre again or to rebuild grep. Per OP output above, grep cannot be rebuilt until the system has a working grep. This may require a trip to the tinderbox. |

Your thinking is correct, because the init scripts will probably fail. In fact, my advice is not to close any applications to keep them working.

Sadly tinderbox only has libpcre-8.12.tbz2 (which is libpcre.so.0), so I don't think that would work...
papapenguin, which version of Portage do you have?
Could you also post the output of "sed -n '/libpcre/p' /var/log/emerge.log"?
