PostPosted: Tue May 29, 2012 2:57 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] No TTY's (Console) after login. {using nvidia>29 Reply with quote

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum, I have googled around and checked on here and not seen anything which points to my problem.

It's a really strange one.
When I log in to GDM and Gnome-3 loads up, I lose the ability to log in to any on my consoles, and I also lose Ctrl+Alt+F12, which I use quite often
when problem solving. That kernel log on F12 has saved my bacon many a time.
No matter what tty I ask for, I am taken from F7 to a blank screen and my monitor turns. (No Signal).
But I can get back to F7.

I can initially see and use any of the tty's until after a few seconds of logging in, I might even have a minute or so before they all disappear.
If I were to use say tty1 and start to compile, and switch over to F7 to use Gnome, I can't go back to F1, as there is no signal.
Switching back to F7 and looking at "htop", I can see the emerge is still running, and indeed agetty is showing all tty's.
But X seems to power off my monitor when I want to use them.
Presuming it is X that is doing this, or some other ACPI issue.

I have recompiled consolekit and that's made no difference.
To the best of my knowledge, I have not changed anything in the kernel config. I have tried gentoo-sources-3.3.1 3.3.2 etc etc, and I usually just use the same
config when updating.

Any ideas?

Yes this is probably the X driver or your hardware doing this, not changing back to text modes properly.

Which driver/graphics hardware?

Are you using Kernel Mode Setting?

He eccerr0r,
No kernel mode setting as far as I am aware.
Using nvidia-drivers-295.40
Have not made any changes to my Xorg conf files.

On all my Intel and ATI graphics machines, with in-kernel driver and KMS enabled, ctrl-alt-XXX switching back to text mode works very cleanly and quickly.

The machine that I run fglrx on ati-drivers) I don't have KMS enabled, it slowly switches back to text mode but it works...

Can you use an older version of the nVidia drivers, or try the nv oss driver?

I haven't used an nVidia card in ages, but may get another with the advent of the OSS driver. Last time I really used an nVidia card was with a GeForce4 MX 420 up until it died of old age...

I don't think I could use an older nvidia-driver as that will want to downgrade xorg-server (if my memory servers me correctly).
What I have noticed are lots of other ~x86 ebuilds of xorg-server available.
I think I will give them a try, and see if that makes any difference.
I am currently running an ~x86 system, so that might be a factor. Pushing up the xorg might help.
As for nouveau, it has matured and I can run gnome-shell with hardware acceleration pretty smooth, but opengl gaming is a no-no.

I've pulled this from system log, and was wondering if it may have something to do with it.
Code:
polkitd(authority=local): Registered Authentication Agent for unix-session:/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session2 (system bus name :1.59 [/usr/bin/gnome-shell], object path /org/freedesktop/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale en_GB.utf8)

In other words, I see a link between Consolekit and Gnome-shell. It is when I log into Gnome-Shell I seem to lose all consoles.

I still suspect xorg/xorg driver. You can try logging in to those virtual terminals blind - could try blindly typing in your login and password and using ssh from another machine to see if you were successful. Basically Xorg is not changing video modes properly and it's the binary blob that makes it hard to debug why.

Actually I should have asked (though it's probably confirmed by the fact that your monitor goes into powersave mode) - Do you see a blinking cursor. If you see a blinking cursor then it could very well be something to do with logins. However if the screen is completely blacked out and/or the monitor went to powersave mode - this shouldn't happen and is a driver issue.

Also what happens upon shutdown or if you stop X11 (/etc/init.d/xdm stop)? Does your screen go back to text mode? If it does... something sinister is going on here, still driver issue...

(Incidently, I found that my Intel graphics machines using their OSS driver seem to outperform my ATI OSS machine (old R200) in Wine/World of Warcraft. Weird indeed. I've yet to see what the R600 and its OSS driver does, nor nouveau versus nvidia-drivers...)

IT IS the x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers !

I didnt post it so far because I was waiting for this problem to occure to someone else, while trying to find bugs in my kernel configuration.

I got this since months; the last one working fine for me was the nvidia-drivers-295.20+ or even nvidia-drivers-295.10+something (wil post the exact version when Im on my home laptop where I use it).

These earlier versions are no more in the portage, you have to find them in the overlays or simply install manualy - and so have I...

Just last evening I messed it again during a large world update and "upgraded" to the latest&greatest - to no avail. Im still "losing" my text mode - console, tty - soon after X starts ; pressing "ctrl-alt-something" leads to a blank display; the input still seems to work.

Would appreciate posts about similar problems.

It looks like a nvidia-drivers bug for now.

Watch for my further posts - so long !

Your UncleVan.

So, the latest bug-free version I got is x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-290.10 .

An ebuild is on http://gpo.zugaina.org/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/ChangeLog; ask me if you dont know how to install the drivers from there.

Im using the vbetool - sys-apps/vbetool-1.1 - to test get/set video modes. Normally it shows:

Code:
vbetool vbemode get
357
and
Code:
vbetool vbemode set 357
is working also (best when in console mode)

when the driver "fails" - after a while in X - there are 2 observations Im making:

1.: the LCD brightness control stops working
2.: vbetool vbemode get is returning giberish - 31116, 16741 or similar

But X is still working fine.

My system is Thinkpad T61 with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz
Graphic is nVidia Corporation G86 [Quadro NVS 140M] (rev a1)

also (to w.i.m.c.):
Code:
$ cat /sys/devices/virtual/vtconsole/vtcon{0,1}/{name,bind}
(S) dummy device
0
(M) frame buffer device
1

Should be opened a bug ? And where ?

Your UncleVan.

Unfortunately the bug needs to be filed against nVidia who wrote the driver and left us with a binary blob. Please also check other distributions and what versions they use and see if other distros have the same problem or not though... hopefully it's not Gentoo specific.... then that would be something for bugs.gentoo.org...

Make sure you also match kernel versions and options too...

Hmm... I have three PCIe machines, two have Intel graphics and work well enough, third has an ATI... probably should test my spare nVidia card to see if it has the same issues...

[Update]
I tried Nouveau with an Nforce2 onboard graphics. KMS seems to be default/forced. Found a common issue that I need to add fb console support separate to the nouveau driver else I have no console upon loading the nouveau.ko kernel driver...

Doubt this is the same problem as the binary blob nvidia-drivers but was interesting to figure out what went wrong...

You're right, I see...

But isnt it possible to pull back the x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-290.10 into portage ? Each one of the foll. versions is suffering this... Anyone expiriencing the same problem should agree.. Just post it.

IMHO, the problem is not showing up probably because 1. most people never use console mode after X starts :wink: and 2. it may relate to specific video bios ...

Ill keep researching into it, but need other opinions too.

Just another data point:

nforce430 with ge6150se on board
kernel 3.1.6
xorg-server-1.11.2-r2
xf86-video-nouveau--0.0.16_pre20111109

I have some generic fb support enabled in the kernel:
Code:

CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_FB_CFB_FILLRECT=y
CONFIG_FB_CFB_COPYAREA=y
CONFIG_FB_CFB_IMAGEBLIT=y
CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS=y
CONFIG_FB_TILEBLITTING=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY=y
CONFIG_FONTS=y
CONFIG_FONT_8X16=y

(I have the vga console stuff enabled, too, and at boot
the vga console is active until the kernel switches to
the framebuffer console.)

I do have drm, KMS, and nouveau enabled in the kernel.

I do not experience the problem with ttys disappearing
and broken ctrl-alt-F[digit].

I have klogd logging directly to /var/log/kern.log,
and I get messages like this from the nouveau driver
when I switch from X to a text-mode virtual console:
Code:

<6>[drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Setting dpms mode 3 on vga encoder (output 0)
<6>[drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Setting dpms mode 0 on vga encoder (output 0)
<6>[drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Output VGA-1 is running on CRTC 0 using output A

mode 3 is graphics mode (X windows), and mode 0 is text mode.

The kernel command line in grub.conf includes "video=640x480-8@75". The nouveau
driver in the kernel complains about an unknown connector type at boot (not specified
in the "video=" parameters, so the kernel apparently never changes the default value),
but it figures it out, and I get a usable 80x30 framebuffer console.

In sum, no problems with this gpu, this kernel, and the kernel
and xorg nouveau drivers. (My usage is virtually all 2D.)

It's indeed good that even the reverse engineered nouveau driver seems to work better than the closed source driver, alas sometimes the 3d is what's really needed... nVidia better fix their drivers....

I'm not sure if the bug needs filed to nvidia, as I am sitting right next to an Arch Linux user who has the latest nvidia-driver and they can switch to a console without any problems.
So should I post a bug on Gentoo bugzilla?

This is a really annoying problem, as I NEED to switch to console whenever gnome throws a problem at me, in order to kill processes.
If my desktop is "frozen" or there is a segfault of some sort, I switch to console and fix the problem.
Something I can't do now.

So can I, on two different graphic cards. But that doesn't mean it isn't a nvidia bug. I didn't carefully go through the at least half dozen threads on nvnews about this issue, so I could be wrong, but it seemed to me it's limited to 8/9 cards.

Ok, so I use a GeForce 8800, so that is why I am being hit with this bug?
Weird. I will go and check out the nv forums.
Is this just another way of forcing users into spending more money in order to ensure they have the latest hardware?

Wow, conspiracy theories, awesome!

No, the real explanation is much simpler: There is a bug. But the nvidia devs either haven't reproduced it yet, or they haven't even looked into it, as console issues are low priority for them.

And I even have proof of that: If there was a conspiracy to get people to upgrade their nvidia cards, why would they then release a new 173xx driver today, providing fully functional xorg-server-1.12 support for Geforce FX cards?

Haha! Forgive me Gusar.
I just thought (after my experience with Windoze a few years ago) nvidia had stopped supporting older cards.
Thanks for the clarity on the fact there is a bug.
I will now annoy the nvidia devs and tell them this isn't good enough.
Again, thanks for the clarity. :wink:

SO here is an update:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2551948#post2551948
It seems users of older GeForce cards will encounter this problem of no TTYs.
The solution is to use the 290* series of drivers (which are no longer in the tree).
Nvidia are apparently on the case. Who knows how long it will take to fix this regression.
I have posted a bug on the bugzilla, to see if the guys will reinstate the 290* driver.
There are bugs posted by guys using the amd64 arch who experienced problems with this particular series of driver, but not many for x86 (of which I am one).
I hope the guys will add 290* to the tree soon.
I miss my consoles.
Bug report can be found https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=420145 < here.

UPDATE:
The latest nvidia-driver-302.* does not fix the problem for GeForce8800GT users.
Consoles do work with the latest nouveau driver, but gnome-shell freaks out and freezes when displaying large jpegs on a web browser.
Which is another reason for a user needing a console so they can kill the process.

Yeah, I gave up on bad video drivers and depended on a second machine connected to the first...whether it be serial or wifi, it helps quite a bit when dealing with bad drivers...

A lot of the times a bad 3d driver causes the machine to oops, and likely is game over for the machine. Again a second machine can help clean up the mess but sometimes a hard reboot is the only way out anyway...

My ATI fglrx machine occasionally hangs and I can't even ctrl-alt-F1 out of it. I suppose in this case I'm hosed either way. I guess magic-sysrq could help, but mostly I've been remote-logging in and rebooting it that way.

Joining over from http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-921286-highlight-.html :)

I was about to post more info when I saw Thistled's response, so I'm posting it here instead.

Found these in my syslog:
Code:

jeanie log # ( zcat messages.4 messages.3 messages.2 messages.1 ; cat messages) |grep -i gpu
Jun 26 00:25:09 localhost kernel: NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.
Jun 26 00:25:09 localhost kernel: NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.
Jun 30 06:55:47 localhost kernel: NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.
Jun 30 06:55:47 localhost kernel: NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.
jeanie log #

They coincide with the nvidia driver update from 290.10 to 302.17, which I did on Jun 25th.

Another datapoint:

This all works with a Quadro NVS 290 (NV86 (G86) chip, NV50 family,
according to http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames ),
using
Code:

kernel 3.2.12 (with drm, kms, and nouveau; FB_VESA, FB_UVESA, FB_NVIDIA not enabled)
x11-base/xorg-server-1.12.2
xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.16_pre20120322

Meaning that the vga to framebuffer console switch works at boot,
X works, and switching back and forth between X and virtual
consoles works. (Not tested with the closed source nvidia drivers.)

Yeah I think I should have been more specific in the subject of the post.
This is only applying to Nvidia drivers above 290.* series.

In my case, that's above 290.10.

Had to leave and post the abridged version of what I meant to post. Here's the complete syslog:
