Hy @all.

I have a strange behaviour on my freshly installed server.

I'm logged in. Everything is up an working, and it ain't my first time around. It's just a fresh install. Server ran for quite some time using gentoo.

Anyway, using 'w' I get nothing:

Code:

nc-1 ~ # w
 22:46:03 up  7:07,  0 users,  load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05
USER     TTY        LOGIN@   IDLE   JCPU   PCPU WHAT
nc-1 ~ #

I'm logged in via ssh as a normal user, afterwards I "su -"'d.

Code:

nc-1 ~ # netstat -an
Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address           Foreign Address         State
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:22              0.0.0.0:*               LISTEN
tcp        0      0 127.0.0.1:5432          0.0.0.0:*               LISTEN
tcp        0    448 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:22         xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:62281     ESTABLISHED
tcp6       0      0 :::80                   :::*                    LISTEN
tcp6       0      0 :::22                   :::*                    LISTEN
tcp6       0      0 ::1:5432                :::*                    LISTEN
tcp6       0      0 :::443                  :::*                    LISTEN
udp6       0      0 ::1:36494               ::1:36494               ESTABLISHED

I'm just wondering why that is.

Any pointers ?

Thanks!

You need to have created at least /var/log/wtmp (chown root:utmp, chmod 664) and have sshd configured to use it (it does by default) for `w` to do anything there.
