Greetings! In short no, you are the installer.
Try genkernel and worry about making a custom kernel latter. That will also resolve any problems about a separate /usr and /var might be causing. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order. |

you could supply us the error message you get, when trying to merge your kernel. so we could help you find out, why the compilation doesn't work. |

As such, to help you, we need detailed error messages and an exact description of where you were in the install when you experienced this "failure".

8 This file describes how to install Anaconda on a Gentoo system, like the Gentoo
9 LiveDVD. It does NOT describe how to install Gentoo using Anaconda.
10
11 First of all, you will need roughly 500 MB of space for all the dependencies and
12 such. Anaconda depends on various libraries and other packages.
13
14 As root:
15 1. cd /
16 2. git clone git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/anaconda-overlay.git
17 3. Add /anaconda-overlay to your PORTDIR_OVERLAY
18 NOTICE: The overlay MUST be in /anaconda-overlay.
19 4. emerge anaconda --autounmask-write
20 5. Update your configs (e.g. etc-update).
21 6. emerge anaconda
22 7. Go for a tea or something ;-)
23 8. Enjoy. |

@likewhoa,
Don't waste your breath on botdotcom.
He's been pestering this forum for an installer because he can't stand/handle the command line.

Try one of pappy's seeds cachorro links to in his sig. It's really not that much of a challenge to get your own kernel up and running. Except the first one (which was done by a friend) I configured all my kernels myself - ok, and one with the help of a seed. _________________ Kali Ma

But I`m using minimal cd during install so its a bit tricky to copy the output :/
But another question, This is a dirty way i know, but can i use the kernel on livedvd? just so i can get gentoo installd, then i can try build my own kernel.? |

I dont exactly know what you mean by dirty and / or "use the kernel on livedvd", but you should be able to boot the livedvd and then chroot from the livedvd into your gentoo system.
When you are in there, you can start compiling your kernel.
This is not dirty at all, I do it all the time
If I am not mistaken (and I am not an expert at all), the following commands should do this for you (run as root):
| Code: |
mkdir /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/{your gentoo root partition} /mnt/gentoo
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount /dev/{your gentoo boot partition} /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
|
This is all taken from the gentoo handbook, and doing it this exact way has done it for me countless times.
Good Luck

Not recommended. Here's the solution to your other problems:
- Get back into the chroot per previous instructions.
- Install wgetpaste
| Code: | | emerge -v wgetpaste | which will paste log files and such to the web easily.
Then provide the requested information. For instance | Code: | | emerge --info | wgetpaste | and then just write down the reported URL and post it here. While you're at it, could you post the name of the stage3 tarball you used and the output of please?

This is a good way to install, will teach you much.
Why not try another cd to do the install, any linux cd will work for installing gentoo. I like the system rescue cd, is handy to have around for other needs.
Many reasons to use a alternative cd for installation, sometimes for wireless drivers, but the bonus is you get firefox to read the manual and come here and ask questions and can post answers.
lets say you use a ubuntu cd, when you get to the part in the handbook where it says /mnt/gentoo, it will complain that /mnt/gentoo does not exist.
mkdir /mnt/gentoo
done, just follow the handbook as normal, system rescue is gentoo based and will not run into this. At this point, instead of giving up, just boot another cd and chroot back into your install and get er done |
