I don't agree with the time frame, but an interesting point on "why."

Here's Why Google and Facebook Might Completely Disappear in the Next 5 Years

After sorting through paragraphs intellectual-sounding bullshit, I believe I have located the author's central premise. To me, this statement suggests that nobody is using web browsers anymore.

It's obviously a joke, I just don't comprehend the humor.

What is your rebuttal anyway?

I stopped reading after he mentioned his PhD (which he got 15 years ago) and therefore should be taken seriously.

Blah blah blah. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about, although he's right about Facebook.

So he's saying that 5-8 years from now people will be using mobile apps almost exclusively, even for data aggregation.

Okay, sure. I follow.

It's his other argument that I don't buy - that because web 1.0 companies haven't been early-to-market competitors for web 2.0 companies, that they will be unable to make the transition to mobile. Bunk.

Maybe you missed this part:
Quote:
The bottom line is that the next 5 – 8 years could be incredibly dynamic. It’s possible that both Google and Facebook could be shells of their current selves – or gone entirely.

See, he knows exactly what he is talking about. It is possible that in 5 to 8 years, some things might change.

he critises Amazon and google for not 'grasping' web2.0 and not being 'social'.

Hm, despite those shortcoming both do pretty well. And there is the loom of 'mobile' crap. Hm, who again develops android?

Sorry, but this guy is full of shit. Desktop search is dead? People use their smartphones for searching?

Ok, hm, I need to go to my sweethheart, which route shall I use - lets ask google maps!
I am typing some search words into the browser app of my smartphone (browser? sounds webby - that thing this guy just declared dead) and lo and behold, GOOGLE provides the answers.

Seriously, this is the niveau of Forbes? Why is that magazine still around? It isn't even half as funny as The Onion.

I really hope, more and more people go mobile and that mobile ISPs don't invest much into their equip, thus forcing the web/apps to become lean and fast again, so I can actually enjoy reading articles instead of searching the text in between ads, animations and crappy layouts.

Wow, I didn't think it seemed that complicated.

It isn't dead "now," this instant. The web, as his theory goes, is like the post office, or landlines, etc. Yeah, they're still around, but they're more or less dead.

If mobile becomes the dominant arena, then he has a very good point. As far as Instagram goes, I don't know much about it, but it seems like an extension of the 'social' aspect of the internet, not the next evolutionary platform.

Email has been "replaced" by the social tools. It's still around and isn't going anywhere, but the younger generations aren't using it much if at all, so how the network is being used is changing.

I think he might be right about Facebook - never used it, so I don't know if it is worse and in which ways so on mobile devices, or rather, smartphones. If it is really not comparable to the FB desktop experience™, then FB might go down. Well, good riddance.
But as energyman said: Google will stay. Google works great with just a search bar and the results are usually good. Some people actually don't really use the address bar of their browser but go to google, search $Keyword and click on the topmost link to get there.

++

It's getting so that almost every web page now looks like a MySpace page, with blinking and moving crap all over the place, taking too long to load, not working right if you don't allow javascript, flash and cookies by default, and then monkeying with your system and your privacy if you do.

considering all those girls constantly posting on facebook from their iphones fb seems to be able to cope well with that 'new' mobile hype.

I know people who type the address of the site they want to visit into googles search bar. Stupid? yes. But as long as it works...

Two steps to accomplish one thing.

Modern web browsers don't have a search box anymore. You type your input in the input box, if it parses as a URI, the browser submits a DNS query for it. If that comes back without error, it establishes a connection. If it's not a URI or or DNS responds negatively, then it submits a search query for the string to your search engine of choice.

maybe but:
open browser
google.com is default page and loads
types adress into google's search box (which I meant with search bar - I use konqeror and search with gg:)
hits enter.

instead of:
open broweser
types adress into adress bar field.

Seems like it is going to increase with the mobile approach (at least as it is moving today).

What is "modern"? Aurora Firefox has one. The !syntax is kind of helpful. !wikipedia foo, !google bar, etc.

Modern browsers allow you configure all the keyboard shortcuts you want for such things.

Not bad, but I prefer OS agnostic browsers. OK, Windows/Linux.

really? because whatever it is, neither firefox nor chromium really advertise it. Instead you get that stupid searchbar with firefox.

Firefox should get rid of it, in my unsolicited, under-informed opinion.
